Transversals and Angles of Intersecting Lines Study Guide- Chapter 3 Definition Transversal is a line that intersects two coplanar lines at two distinct points. (In other words, it's a line that crosses two other lines) When a transversal intersects two lines a series of angles are formed. If the two lines are parallel, then several congruent and supplementary angles are formed. TRANSVERSAL Example Description Transversal creates several distinct types of angles. Illustrated on the left is a transversal that intersects line a and b. Definition Corresponding Angles are the angle pairs that are in the same position. CORRESPONDING ANGLES Example Description Corresponding Angle Pairs are illustrated on the left. Pairs of Corresponding Angles: 1 and 5 3 and 7 4 and 8 2 and 6 Definition Alternate Exterior Angles are the angle pairs that are on the outsides of the two lines (the exterior) and on opposite (or alternate sides) of the transversal. ALTERNATE EXTERIOR ANGLES Example Description Alternate Exterior Angle Pairs are illustrated on the left. Pairs of Alternate Exterior Angles: 1 and 8 2 and 7 Definition ALTERNATE INTERIOR ANGLES Example Alternate Interior Angles are the angle pairs that are on the insides of the two lines (the interior) and on opposite (or alternate sides) of the transversal. Definition Same Side Interior Angles are the angle pairs that are on the insides of the two lines (the interior) and on the same side of the transversal. Description Alternate Interior Angle Pairs are illustrated on the left. Pairs of Alternate Interior Angles: 3 and 6 4 and 5 SAME SIDE INTERIOR ANGLES Example Description Same Side Interior Angle Pairs are illustrated on the left. Pairs of Same Side Interior Angles: 3 and 5 4 and 6 Definition Congruent Angel Pairs are. CONGRUENT ANGLE PAIRS Example Description Listed below are the types of congruent angles formed by parallel lines. Line X is parallel to Line Y. Corresponding Angle Pairs 1 and 5 3 and 7 4 and 8 2 and 6 Alternate Exterior Angle Pairs 1 and 8 2 and 7 Alternate Exterior Angle Pairs 1 and 8 2 and 7
