Honors Chapter 5 Extra Credit Family Letter Dear Parent or Guardian: Recently we began Chapter 5: Multi-Step Equations and Inequalities. In this chapter, your student will learn how to solve one-step and two-step equations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Also, we will be solving equations with rational coefficients. Included in this letter are key vocabulary words and activities you can do with your student. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact me at [email protected] Sincerely, Ms. Rifkowitz Vocabulary coefficient The numerical factor of a term that contains a variable. equation A mathematical sentence that contains an equals sign, =, stating that two quantities are equal. equivalent equations Two or more equations with the same solution. formula An equation that shows the relationship among certain quantities. inequality An open sentence that uses <, >, ≠, ≤, or ≥ to compare two quantities. solution A replacement value for the variable in an open sentence. A value for the variable that makes an equation true. Extra Credit At-Home Activities Hands-On Activity Materials: cups and positive and negative counters • Write a one-step addition equation, for example x + 3 = 12. • Model the equation as shown. Use a cup to represent the unknown value, x. + + • Add enough positive counters in the cup so that both sides of the equal sign have the same number of total counters. The number of counters in the cup is the solution to the equation. = + + + + + + + + + + + + + • Repeat this activity using other addition equations. Online Activity • Find the formula that converts degrees Celsius to degrees Fahrenheit. 130° 125° 120° 115° 110° 100° 90° • Choose 5 sets of numbers for degrees Fahrenheit to convert. 80° 70° 60° 50° 40° • Solve for the remaining variable. 90° 85° 80° 75° 70° 65° 60° 55° 50° 45° 40° 15° 10° 5° 0° 105° 100° 95° 25° 20° 215° 210° 105° 35° 30° 220° 95° 85° 75° 65° 55° 45° 35° 30° 25° 20° 15° 10° 5° 0° °C °F
