Constitution
The constitution should be simple yet comprehensive and difficult to amend, leaving any specific
procedural rules to be included in the by-laws. When amending the constitution, as with the by-laws,
previous notice of any proposed changes are usually required to be given to the membership and should not
be changed in the same meeting in which proposed.
Article l - Name, Purpose, and Non-Discrimination Policy of the Organization.
Section 1: Name:
Association for the Business of Sports
Section 2 - Purpose:
The Association for the Business of Sports strives to educate students about opportunities in the fields of
both professional and collegiate athletics by providing interactions with professionals from the field. The
objective of the organization is to promote exploration into the diverse field of athletics.
Section 3 - Non-Discrimination Policy:
This organization and its members shall not discriminate against any individual(s) for reasons of age,
color, disability, gender identity or expression, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or
veteran status.
Article II - Membership: Qualifications and categories of membership.
Voting membership is limited to students of The Ohio State University who have paid the membership
fees. Membership fees are $5 per semester. {00116229-2}
Article III - Organization Leadership: Titles, terms of office, type of selection, and duties of the leaders.
President:
 Terms of office: President shall serve from selection through graduation OR resignation
 Selection: One semester prior to graduation or planned resignation of current president, executive
board will solicit applications for position. Executive board will interview and vote on candidates,
using 51% majority vote for winner. Semester of current president’s graduation, president elect
will attend executive board meetings and shadow president prior to taking over presidential duties.
 Duties: Preside over all executive and general meetings, Represent ABS and its members at all
times, oversee the actions and duties of all other executive board members, reserve meeting space,
coordinate community outreach, schedule speakers for meetings
Vice President:
 Terms of office: Vice president shall serve from selection through graduation OR resignation
 Selection: One semester prior to graduation or planned resignation of current vice president,
executive board will solicit applications for position. Executive board will interview and vote on
candidates, using 51% majority vote to determine winner. Semester of current vice president’s
graduation, vice president elect will attend executive board meetings and shadow vice president
prior to taking over duties.
 Duties: Assist president in all duties. Maintain organizational binder, including records of
meetings, members, events and potential speakers, etc.
Treasurer:
 Terms of office: Treasurer shall serve from selection through graduation OR resignation
 Selection: One semester prior to graduation or planned resignation of current treasurer, executive
board will solicit applications for position. Executive board will interview and vote on candidates,
using 51% majority vote to determine winner. Semester of current treasurer’s graduation, treasurer
elect will attend executive board meetings and shadow treasurer prior to taking over duties.
 Duties: Keep financial records updated and accurate, Balance organization’s checkbook, Write
checks and deposit funds
Article VI – Method of Selecting and/or Removing Officers and Members.
Removal of officers: Any officer may be removed from membership by a two-thirds vote of the Executive
Board. Any officer removed may appeal to the general membership. Said officer shall be considered
reinstated with two-thirds approval of the members.
Removal of members: Members may be impeached and, if convicted, may be expelled from membership
by a two-thirds majority of the voting members on the basis of not fulfilling the purpose of the
organization.
Article VII – Advisor(s) or Advisory Board: Qualification Criteria.
Advisor is expected to be in attendance for all executive board meetings.
Article VIII – Meetings of the Organization: Required meetings and their frequency.
Three general meetings of the membership are required for each academic term except for summer.
Article IX – Method of Amending Constitution: Proposals, notice, and voting requirements.
Proposed amendments must be submitted in writing to the executive board, no less than one week prior to
the general meeting at which they are proposed. Proposed amendments will be read at two general meetings
and the general meeting in which the votes will be taken. Approval of amendment requires at least twothirds of voting members present.
Article X – Method of Dissolution of Organization
Requirements and procedures for dissolution of the student organization should be stated. Should any
organization assets and debt exist, appropriate means for disposing of these assets and debts should be
specified clearly and unequivocally.
Upon dissolution of organization, ownership of assets shall revert to Council on Student Affairs general
fund.
