File: JJJ Extracurricular Activity Eligibility Philosophy Participation in athletics and extracurricular activities is considered a privilege, not a right, and students wishing to participate are required to meet standards of personal behavior and academic performance. Although participation in extracurricular activities and athletics is a valued complement to its educational goals, the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind (CSDB) recognizes that the academic program must have top priority in the educational process. CSDB is well aware of the importance of the activities program, but it also recognizes that activities should never overshadow the emphasis placed on classroom work. For purposes of this policy, “activity” means any extracurricular or interscholastic activity including but not limited to any academic, artistic, athletic, recreational or other related activity offered by CSDB. Examples of such activities include but are not limited to interscholastic sports, music, speech, student council, as well as activities sponsored by CSDB, such as Special Olympics, Close-Up, Academic Bowl, Match Wits, and Running Club. “Activity” does not include school dances or other similar one-time events. Participation in activities All students meeting CSDB eligibility requirements are entitled to participate in CSDB’s extracurricular activities (JJJ-R: Extracurricular Activity Eligibility). Subject to the same eligibility requirements, CSDB shall allow students enrolled in any school (including public schools, charter schools, nonpublic schools and home schools) to participate on an equal basis in any activity offered by CSDB. Regarding athletic teams, CSDB may reserve slots for up to twice the number of starting positions on the team at each level of competition for students enrolled in CSDB. With regard to individual athletic activities, CSDB may reserve slots for up to half the total number of team members at each level of competition for students enrolled in CSDB. Students who are being educated in a home-based program may participate provided they comply with all laws governing non-public home-based education. Eligibility requirements To participate in activities at CSDB, a student shall meet all eligibility requirements imposed by CSDB. If a student has not met all of the eligibility requirements or if the student would have become ineligible to participate at a school, the student cannot gain or regain eligibility by applying to participate in activities at CSDB. The Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind, Colorado Springs, CO Page 1 of 2 File: JJJ Participation fee Students not enrolled in CSDB who are participating in CSDB activities shall pay the same fee charged to CSDB students for participation in the activity. CHSAA requirements Eligibility requirements as published by the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) shall be observed by all students at the high school level. Student participation in an activity through any amateur association or league that is not a member of CHSAA shall not prevent the student from participating or affect eligibility to participate in the same activity at CSDB as long as the student has the express written permission of the building principal, the student’s class attendance is not compromised and the student is in good academic standing. Appeal Any student who is sanctioned or is found by CSDB or CHSAA to be ineligible to participate in any extracurricular activity may appeal the sanction or finding to the Athletic Director. Students may not appeal sanctions for unsportsmanlike conduct or ejection from the activity.
