Invertebrates - Animals without backbones Some have a hard outer covering or a shell, for example insects, crabs, or clams Others do not have a hard outer covering or a shell, for example jellyfish or worms Other examples of invertebrates are spiders, shrimp, crayfish, sponges, sea stars, or snails Vertebrates - Animals with backbones Vertebrates are divided into 5 groups: Fish, Amphibians, Reptiles, Birds, and Mammals Plants are organisms produce their own food. Many different types of plants have been identified. Some plants produce flowers while other plants do not produce flowers. Flowering plants are those plants that make seeds within flowers. Some flowers become the fruits that contain seeds. Examples are grasses, roses, oak trees, fruit trees, tomatoes, or bean plants. Nonflowering plants are those plants that produce seeds within cones or produce spores instead of seeds. Some examples of nonflowering plants are pines, spruce, or cedar trees that produce cones, and ferns, mosses, and lichens that produce spores. Ecosystems Swamps- hot abundant water cypress trees, ferns, and water lilies alligators, egrets, turtles Rivers and Streams - temperature varies abundant water bushes, trees on banks, water plants fish, crayfish, snakes, insects Tropical Rainforests - hot humid trees, vines, lush plant growth birds, frogs, monkeys Deserts - hot - cold dry cactus lizards, scorpions, rabbits Polar Regions - cold dry/frozen water lichens and mosses seals, polar bears, and penguins Behaviors are reponses to a change in the environment. Behaviors can be grouped into 2 categories - Instinctual and Learned Instinctual behaviors include birds migrating, ducks swimming, and bears hibernating. Learned behaviors include bears fishing and dogs rolling over on command. Physical Characteristics can be placed into 2 categories - Inherited and Acquired Inherited characteristics include leaf type, flower color, skin coverings, and eye color. Acquired characteristics include weight gain or loss, hair length, and number of leaves on a plant.
