The Battlefronts & Alliances

During World War I there was an
Eastern Front & a Western Front


The line where 2 armies meet is called a
Battlefront.
One army was the Allied Powers

England, France, Russia, & Italy


Italy had switched sides (didn’t like Austria)
The other army was the Central Powers

Austria-Hungary, Germany, Bulgaria, & the
Ottoman Empire
Trench Warfare

On the Western Front, both sides used
extensive systems of trenches to
protect themselves from their enemies

A “No man’s land” separated the trenches


Offensives involved charging across & attacking
the enemy’s trenches
With new technology the body count was
extremely high

No Man’s Land
New Weapons of WWI

Machine Gun


Artillery


Large cannon that could fire shells great
distances up to 10 miles.
Poison (Mustard) Gas


used in trenches and mounted on airplanes &
tanks
Gas artillery shells were fired at the trenches.
Dangerous to both sides.
Tanks

used to break through the trench systems and
“no man’s land”.
More Weapons

Airplane


Submarine (U-Boat)


Used to spot enemy positions and bomb
ground targets
Used by Germany to blockade ports and
sink supply ships
Zeppelin (Blimp)

Used by Germany to bomb England

Ineffective because it could easily be set on
fire by gunfire
New Weapons
The War of Attrition

Trench Warfare caused the war to
become a stalemate


Neither side could gain an advantage
WWI became a war of attrition

Each side tried to outlast the other side


The Army that ran out of men, weapons, or
supplies first lost.
This caused battles to be very long and
costly.
The War of Attrition
The “World” War

British Col. T. E. Lawrence
went to the Middle East


Trained and helped the Arabs
revolt against the Ottomans
Colonies around the world
were drawn into the fight


Troops from New Zealand &

Other colonies sent needed
raw materials & supplies
