Egyptian Religion
• There were over 2000 Egyptian gods and
goddesses. Belief and worship of more than
one god is called polytheism. Egyptian gods
and goddess represented animals and other
elements of nature.
• The Egyptian people looked to the gods for
good harvests, floods or to prevent droughts.
As a result of this they prayed, and made
offerings at temples to ensure their prosperity.

Pharaohs
• Pharaohs were worshipped by the Egyptians as kings,
and living gods. As a result of this, people trusted the
pharaohs to make important decisions for them. Many
pharaohs spent much of their lives preparing for their
deaths. They built pyramids that would eventually
become their tombs.
• Some well known pharaohs were King Menes who
united upper and lower Egypt, King Tut whose tomb
discovery was one of the 20th centuries greatest
archeological finds, and Queen Hatshepsut a female
who rose to power despite the ideals of her time.

Afterlife
• The Egyptians believed in life after death.
They believed that when they died, their
bodies would take a journey to another world
and live a new life. In order to live this other
life, Egyptians needed to preserve the body
and bury their dead with objects that they
used during their life. After the body was
preserved, the body was put in a tomb. The
largest of the tombs were the pyramids,
where the pharaohs were buried.

Mummification
• Mummification was the process by which the Egyptians
preserved their dead. This was a very long process that
took around 70 days. First, the body was washed and
purified. Next, the internal organs where removed and
the body cavity was dried out using natron. After this,
the organs were placed in canopic jars, and the body
would be further dried out for a period of 40 days.
After the drying period, the body was bandaged using
resin and wrapped in multiple layer of linen. After the
final preparations were made, there was a funerary
procession and the body would be entombed.

Hieroglyphics - system of writing using
ancient Egyptian symbols. The system
involved a series of "picture" words.
Historians believe that Egyptians began
to use this system in 3000 B.C.

Here are some interesting facts about
hieroglyphics........
It involved no vowels.....consonants only!
No formal punctuation or spacing
There were over 700 ancient Egyptian
symbols representing actual words, and
thousands of others for individual sounds
It was written both vertically in rows and
horizontally in columns, and was either
read from right to left or from left to right.
The calendar was based on the
phases of the moon.
There were 3 seasons which
corresponded with the cycles of
the Nile.
Though the Egyptians did have
a 360 day calendar, in reality,
they had a 365 day calendar
system. At the beginning of the
year, they added five days
known as "the yearly five days".
These five days were filled with
celebrations and Egyptian
rituals.
The Egyptian calendar is a
lasting achievement because it
was the model for our 365 day
calendar.
The Egyptian Calendar
Egypt's architects are best known for building the
pyramids. However, they also built spectacular temples.
The temples were ornately decorated with statues of
deities and carved walls.
Other structures uniquely designed by the Egyptians
were obelisks and sphinxes.
