Explain how the choices people make affect their health.
a. A person’s choices can affect all 3 components of their health; from how much sleep
they get to who they hang out with on the weekend. An individual that is able to make
knowledgeable and rational choices and is able to take appropriate calculated risks will
have a big positive impact on their over-all health and wellness.

Describe two factors that can be used to evaluate overall health.
a. Life Expectancy- number of years a person is expected live. Used evaluate a
population’s health. (Ex. Life expectancy in the U.S.)
b. Quality of Life- is the degree of overall satisfaction that a person gets from life. More
individualized way of evaluating health.

Explain the 3 main components of health.
a. Physical Health-how well your body functions. When you are physically healthy you are
able to carry out everyday tasks without becoming tired and you are free from physical
pain, discomfort, disease, and illness. A healthy diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep,
and proper medical and dental care are all important for physical health.
b. Mental/Emotional Health- the state of being comfortable with yourself, others, and
surroundings. Being free of mental disorders. Your mind is alert, you learn from
mistakes, and you recognize achievement. Emotional Health- how you react to events
in your life. Mental/Emotional Health- is how we think, feel, and act as we cope with
life. How we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices are factors influencing
mental/emotional health. How you cope with stress, manage feelings, and share
feelings are all important aspects of mental and emotional health.
c. Social Health-how well you get along with others, build relationships, and communicate.
When you are socially healthy, you have loving relationships, respect the rights of
others, give help, and accept help. Building healthy relationships with friends and
family, communicating your needs effectively, and having positive relations and
interactions with your community are all important aspects of social health.

Describe a strategies used to evaluate risk factors.
a. Consider both short- and long-term consequences. Decide whether you can control the
risk factor. Analyze the possible benefits and risks of the decision

Create beneficial and realistic personal health goals.
a. Use S.M.A.R.T. to create a goal, you can use the one you used on the my goals health
worksheet
Goal: In 3 months I want to be able to do 100 push-ups.
Specific- There is a specific number, not all goals can be quantitatively assessed some are qualitative.
How do you make those specific?
Measureable- The measurement is the number of pushups. Progress can be measured and assessed. It
is easily determined when the goal is met.
Attainable-If I can currently do 40 pushup increasing to 100 in 3 months is attainable
Realistic-It is realistic because it does not take much time and it is something I am motivated to do.
Motivation, time, and effort are important to consider.
Timely- 3 months is a set specific time, makes the goal very attainable and realistic.

a. Heredity- all the traits passed biologically from parent to child.

c. Environment- physical and social conditions that surround a person and can influence
that person’s health.
d. Culture- the beliefs and patterns of behavior that are shared by a group of people and
passed on from generation to generation.
