Comprehension
1. Find a sentence in the story that has some words in it that you do not understand.
Explain that sentence in your own words. Remember, context of a sentence is
important.
2. What did the author want you to think about the main character? What things in
the story made you think this is what the author wanted you to think? In other
words, can you prove why you think as you do about the main character?
3. Write a summary of the story.
Application
1. Think of one way a person in the story solved a problem. When you have decided
on the person, write what you learned about solving the problem that you could
use sometime in solving problems of your own. What kind of trouble was he/she
in? What was the problem to be solved? Do you have or have you ever faced a
similar problem?
2. Think of a situation that happened to a person in the story and decide whether you
would have done the same thing he/she did or something different. What would
you have done in the same situation?
Synthesis
1. If you were involved in an exciting part of the story how would you feel?
I would be very scared that something would go wrong and I would get hurt.
2. Write another ending to the story that is different from the one the author wrote.
Write at least one paragraph.
3. When you have read roughly half of the book, PREDICT what will happen in the
rest of the book to the main character. Or what will happen next? Give reasons for
your predictions.
Evaluation
1. Was the main character in the book good or bad? Defend your decision with
examples from the book.
2. Choose a character from the book and tell what you think about the person. Do
you like him/her? Why or why not? Be specific and use examples to defend your
decision.
Analysis
1. What part of the story was the funniest? Most exciting? Saddest?
Saddest- when the little boy finds his dad dead.
Exciting- the little boy helping apron give birth to the calf.
2. What was the author’s purpose in writing the book? What ideas, feelings, etc. did
he want to give you about the theme?
3. Compare the book to a TV program or movie that is similar.
I think this book is very similar to “Charlotte’s Web” because it is about a child who falls
in love with a runt of one of their pets that without them would have been killed.
