Let the Eastern Bastards Freeze in the Dark wins $10,000 Dafoe Book Prize for 2013
Mary Janigan, has won the 2013 J.W. Dafoe Book Prize for Let the Eastern Bastards Freeze in the Dark: The
West versus the Rest Since Confederation, published by Alfred A. Knopf Canada.
In making its selection, the Jury noted that “Mary Janigan's Let the Eastern Bastards Freeze in the Dark examines
the extended struggle between the West and Ottawa for control of the rich resources of western Canada. Combining
scholarly research with an accessible style, Janigan offers a fresh historical perspective on an enduring tension that is as
significant to today's Canada as it was to the Canada of John Dafoe.”
Mary Janigan’s work was selected from 42 submissions and a short list of 5 books.
The Prize will be formally awarded at the J.W. Dafoe Foundation’s Book Prize Dinner on May 15 in Winnipeg.
The J.W. Dafoe Book Prize is awarded to the best book on Canada, Canadians, and/or Canada’s place
in the world published in the previous calendar year.
The Prize memorializes John Wesley Dafoe, one of the most significant Canadian editors of the 20th
century. In his tenure at the Manitoba Free Press, later renamed the Winnipeg Free Press, from 19011944, Dafoe was known for his advocacy of western development, free trade, national independence, and
the Commonwealth.
The foundation’s activities also support $15,000 fellowships for MA students pursuing studies in
international relations, politics, economics or history, at the University of Manitoba and a number of
colloquia on Canada in international affairs.
