STRUCTURE OF THE EARTH ACTIVITY
In this activity you are going to build a model of the interior of the Earth
and its surface. You will only be given one file folder and if you fail to follow
the directions, you will not be given another one (although you may provide
your own).
You will have approximately two class periods to work on your project.
You will have to do some work at home, such as computer research of facts
that you are going to use.
Your completed model is due on:
.
MATERIALS:
One manila folder
Rubric
Checklist
Ruler
Compass
Assorted colored pencils, markers etc.
Pre-read ALL of the directions before you begin.
PROCEDURE:
1. Using your metric ruler, cut out two (2) squares from the file folder that
measure 20cm on each side.
2. Draw two, very light diagonal lines across opposite corners of both
squares so that you form a very light “X”. The spot where the lines intersect is
the center of the square. Erase the pencil marks but not the center mark.
3. Using your compass, draw a circle that has a radius of 9.5 cm on both
sides of both squares. Practice using the compass on scrap paper before
drawing any circle on any of the sides.
4. From the middle of one side, draw a very faint pencil line from the edge of
each square to the mid-point of each circle. Use your scissors to cut a slit to
the center point of each square.
5. Slip one square into the other square and you should have the structure
that is on the front table. The circles on all four sides should match exactly as
they do on the supply table. From this point forward, do not separate the
squares.

6. Label each square in upper left hand corner with the letters “A”, “B”, “C”,
and “D” as shown on the structure on the front table. Write your name and
period number in the lower left hand corner of side A.
7a. On side A, use your compass to draw the layers of the Earth based on
their chemical composition as shown on page 191 of your textbook.
7b. Label and color these layers. The following must be labeled on this side:
crust (grey)
mantle (red)
core (yellow)
thickness of each layer in kilometers (km)
percent (%) of earth’s mass
major elements present in each layer
8a. On side C, use your compass to draw the structure of the Earth based
on physical characteristics as seen pages 192 and 193 of your textbook.
8b. Label and color these layers. The following must be found in this
drawing:
lithosphere (grey)
asthenosphere (red)
mesosphere (orange)
outer core (yellow)
inner core (red- yellow)
thickness of each layer in kilometers (km)
description of the characteristics of each layer
9. Do not use colors that are too dark, too light or too streaky. Be neat.
10. Cut out the Western Hemisphere map and carefully glue or back tape it
to side B. Color the landmasses and oceans an appropriate color. Use the
map to label the continents and oceans.
11. Cut out the Eastern Hemisphere map and carefully glue or back tape it to
side D. Color the landmasses and oceans an appropriate color. Use the map
to label the continents and oceans.
12. Use the Earth Structure checklist to complete sides B & D.
Note: Your model will be used as a tool as you investigate the structure
of the earth. You may include additional information to help you better
understand this topic.
