Have a 1 minute conversation with the person you’re sitting next to.
State EVERYTHING you know about this number.
10
5
• WHAT DO THESE
NUMBERS HAVE IN
COMMON?
• HOW ARE THESE
NUMBERS
DIFFERENT?
25
Do you think 25
is more closely
related to 10 or
5….explain your
thinking?
When looking at a one hundred chart
such as this, we see different types of
numbers.
• Odd and Even numbers
•
Hopefully these should be pretty obvious at this point.
There are other types of numbers that it
is important to identify, as
understanding these types of numbers
helps us understand factors, multiples,
and rules of divisibility.
• PRIME NUMBERS
• COMPOSITE NUMBERS
• SQUARE NUMBERS
COPY DOWN THE FOLLOWING THINKING MAP IN YOUR
NOTEBOOK.
PRIME
• A number with only 2
factors (1 and itself)
____ x ____ = 5
1x5=5
1 and 5 are the only two whole numbers
that multiply to form a product of 5.
1 and 5 are factors of 5.
COMPOSITE
• A number with more
than 2 factors.
____ x ____ = 10
1 x 10 = 10
2 x 5 = 10
10 has 4 different numbers as
factors; 1, 2, 5, 10
SQUARE
• The product of a whole
number with itself.
5 x 5 = 25
6 x 6 = 36
When you multiply a number to itself, it
forms a square number. Can you think of
any others?
DIVISIBILITY
A number is divisible by another number if the quotient is a
whole number with no remainder.
24 ÷ 6 = 4
QUOTIENT: The answer to a
division problem.
24 is divisible by 6.
14 ÷ 5= 2 r 4
14 is not
divisible by 5.
IN YOUR NOTEBOOK, WRITE DOWN THE FOLLOWING NUMBERS:
12
COMPOSITE. DIVISIBLE BY 2 AND 3 BUT NOT 5.
21
COMPOSITE. DIVISBLE BY 3 BUT NOT 2 OR 5.
37
PRIME. NOT DIVISIBLE BY 2, 3, OR 5
64
COMPOSITE. DIVISIBLE BY 2 BUT NOT 3 OR 5.
WITH A PARTNER, DISCUSS IF THESE NUMBERS ARE PRIME, COMPOSITE, OR SQUARE.
ARE ANY OF THESE NUMBERS DIVISIBLE BY 2? DIVISIBLE BY 3? DIVISIBLE BY 5?
