The Admission Application must be completed by February 2, 2009.
Please email Admission Applications to Kirsten Nordblom as a Word file
attachment only. Should you have any questions, please contact Kirsten at 310338-2321 or by email at [email protected].
The Admission Application should consist of the following:
Name of School:
1. Title of the case:
(Note: Please be certain that your case involves a business or industry. A case
about a nonprofit or municipal organization, despite the fact that there are
financial and ethical issues involved, does not qualify.)
2. A description of the basic facts of the case (no more than 250 words). Basic,
relevant financial, legal and ethical information would be ideal.
3. A description of the main ethical issue(s) involved (approximately 250 words).
This is the most important part of the Admission Application. You are expected
to show that you can apply a secular, philosophical approach to your case and
explain the problem involved in simple, everyday, common sense terms of the
sort people use in business. (Hint: people generally don't say,
"deontological," utilitarianism" or "Aristotle" around a conference table.)
4. At least a general idea of how you intend to resolve the problem
(approximately 200 words). You're probably facing competing demands among
the company's ethical, financial and/or legal obligations. Give us some idea
about your preliminary thoughts about how you might resolve this.
We do not expect that you have fully worked out the case at this point. We do
expect that you have identified a case and that you have at least a preliminary
sense of the nature and complexity of the ethical issues involved. We assume
that between now and the competition, you'll be changing your mind about many
aspects of your case, so application materials will not be a factor in the scoring in
the competition.
Preference will first be given to teams that show a more subtle and sophisticated
understanding of the ethical issues involved. Preference will next be given
to teams with more complex cases. In other words, there's no benefit to choosing
a complex case unless you can do an excellent analysis.
