How Gaming has changed throughout the
decades.
By Tiffani Cameron
We all know about the Xbox and Play stations, but what about the other consoles that have
been created? How did we get the gaming world that we have today?
Following the death of the Nintendo’s recent President – Satoru Itawa, this article is written in
light of his successful impact on gamer’s hearts and on the industry.
Nintendo Co., Ltd. (Japanese: 任天堂株式会社 Hepburn: Nintendō Kabushiki gaisha?) is a
Japanese multinational consumer electronics company headquartered in Kyoto, Japan. Nintendo is the
world's largest video game company by revenue. Founded on September 23, 1889, by Fusajiro
Yamauchi, it originally produced handmade hanafuda playing cards. Before expanding into console
gaming.
The most notable consoles from Nintendo are: The Nintendo Entertainment System or NES,
The Super Nintendo Entertainment System or SNES, Nintendo 64 or N64, Nintendo Gamecube, Wii,
Wii U, The GameBoy Series (Gameboy, Gameboy Colour, and Gameboy Advanced), The Nintendo
DS’s (Nintendo DS, DS Lite, 3DS, 2DS). Nintendo have had other machines that they have created
but have been less popular like the Virtual Boy bringing in Virtual Reality to our world, however at
the time this was created in 1995 this was unachievable and the project was deemed as a failure.
Many people will know that today’s consoles are vastly different than those created back in
the 80’s to 90’s because of the new technology created. For Example, the Virtual Boy is just a
prototype compared to today’s VR – The Oculus Rift on PC.
The rivals of Nintendo at the time were Sony. Sony are best known for their Playstations but
what many people don’t know is that the Playstation was originally meant to be a Nintendo System,
however Nintendo declined the design of Sony’s Playstation 1.
Sony Corporation (ソニー株式会社 Sonī Kabushiki Gaisha?), commonly referred to as Sony,
is a Japanese multinational conglomerate corporation headquartered in Kōnan Minato, Tokyo, Japan.
Its diversified business is primarily focused on the electronics (TV, gaming consoles, refrigerators),
game, entertainment and financial services sectors. Unlike Nintendo, Sony has expanded from the
gaming world into sound and other forms of entertainment.
Sony’s first playstation was created in 1994, competing against The N64 and Sega Saturn.
The 2 faces of Sony at the time were Spyro the Dragon and Crash Bandicoot, both also competing
against Nintendo’s Mario and Sega’s Sonic. The Playstation has gotten world-wide interest and
success, shown by the many consoles following the original playstaion such as the PS2, PS3, PS4, and
PSVita, Play station Portable or PSP etc.
While on the topic of Sega.
Sega Holdings Co. Ltd. (株式会社セガホールディングス Kabushiki-gaisha Sega
hōrudingusu?), originally short for Service Games and officially styled as SEGA, is a
Japanese multinational video game developer, publisher, and entertainment holding company
headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, with multiple offices around the world. Sega developed and
manufactured numerous home video game consoles from 1983 to 2001, but the financial losses
incurred from their Dreamcast console caused the company to restructure itself in 2001, and focus on
providing software as a third-party developer from then on. Nonetheless, Sega remains the world's
most prolific arcade producer, with over 500 games in over 70 franchises on more than 20
different arcade system boards since 1981.
Sega have had many consoles as well as Nintendo such as: The Sega Dreamcast, Sega Saturn,
Sega Genesis as the most popular, however Sega hasn’t been as popular as Sony and are now selling
their products under a third-party but are acknowledged by their purchasers such as Microsoft in the
game Sonic Boom featured on Xbox.
The Xbox was created by Microsoft in 2001.
Xbox (stylized as XBOX) is a video gaming brand created and owned by Microsoft. It
represents a series of video game consoles developed by Microsoft, with three consoles released in
the sixth, seventh, and eighth generations respectively. The brand also
represents applications (games), streaming services, and an online service by the name of Xbox Live.
Xbox evidentially only create the Xbox series – Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft are all going well with their creations with more being created and
announced yearly or bi-yearly. Whereas Sega is no longer making their own consoles or games but
are constantly supported by third-party co-operations such as Nintendo and Microsoft. Sony and
Microsoft are still huge rivals to this day. However looking at the financial records Sony earns
$663billion USD per year as of 2015 and Microsoft $93.58 billion USD per year as of 2015.
The many changes brought about in the gaming world are because all these companies have
borrowed each other’s internal and external components. Through all the rivalries each company has
help one another out in their time of need and through other companies such and Nvidia (Graphic
Design Company), Raedon (Graphic Design Company) have allowed their graphics of said consoles
to become better and better, creating the 1080P graphics every gamer aspires for…
A gaming console I haven’t spoken about is PC, but PC’s are everywhere and can play most
games, like facebook games to originally console only games such as the original Tomb Raider on
PS1. The ever expanding technology makes PC Gaming a competitive scene, however expensive due
to the minimum requirements (specs of your PC such as RAM – Random Access Memory, Graphics
Card – Nvidia or Raedon needed for game).
Each console has increased graphic, Memory and RAM capability allowing a game to run
quicker and easier as time goes on. The technological advances have allowed us gamers to have the
gaming knowledge, accessibility and especially the world we have today. Without these advances in
technology and without the rivalries we wouldn’t be having any of these consoles now.
This is Clarrissa; she is my main character in an online game – World of Warcraft. She
represents me by her class Priest, priests heal their allies and require a great deal of patience and how
they are cunning in creating strategies to defeat bosses in game.
The purpose of this avatar is to allow me to walk around in game around the world of Azeroth
and communicate with others in game. World of Warcraft is a PC MMORPG (Mass Multiplayer
Online Role Playing Game).
Clarrissa is useful for me by allowing me to explore the world and act in a way I never can.
Her class is reflective of one part of my personality, in the game you can create more characters, and
each represents a different part of my personality.
I designed Clarrissa this way, because I found it fitting for the world’s daintiness and horror
combined. Her gear/armour is allowing me to consider how to complete my objectives (quests) more
effectively.
What Clarrissa says about me is nothing in appearances but says a lot about me in game but
her class and how she gets played by healing her allies by literally saying I am always ready to help
someone when in need and never abandon them.
The advantages in World of Warcraft are healers are highly requested for dungeons and/or
raids (modes to progress in game). A major disadvantage is you get blamed for EVERYTHING, by
not healing effectively or not communicating with the rest of the group aka not pulling your weight in
a group.
