The Graduate Faculty Board has approved the following new and revised scholarships at the
graduate level. Senate executive is now asked to consider these for approval and forearding to
Senate for information.

17. Clyde Sanger and IDRC Scholarship
1. Donald R. Wiles Prize for Laboratory Demonstrators
Four Prizes, awarded annually to excellent Student Demonstrators or Teaching Assistants in the
First Year Laboratories in Science. One recipient will be selected by the Chairman of each
Department for the Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences and Physics programs. If a graduate
student is selected, the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research will award the prize on the
recommendation of the Chairman of the department. The processes of selection of winners may
differ from one department to another, although the objective of encouraging excellence among
Student Demonstrators should not. Endowed in 2006, by friends of Donald R. Wiles on the
occasion of his 80th birthday.
2. Brian MacIntosh Bursary in Social Work
Awarded annually to one or more senior undergraduate or graduate students in the School of
Social Work who require financial assistance in order to continue or complete their studies at
Carleton University. Recipients must be Canadian Citizens or permanent residents of Canada
(landed immigrant or a protected person) and must also meet OSAP's Ontario residency
requirement. Recipients must demonstrate financial need. Endowed in 2006 by family, friends
and colleagues, in memory of Brian MacIntosh. Brian was a child protection worker at the
Children's Aid Society of the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry in Cornwall.
He graduated from the Carleton University School of Social Work in 2003. He died in a boat
accident in September 2003.
3. William Barton Award in Arms Control and Disarmament
Awarded annually to an outstanding full time graduate student in the Norman Paterson School of
International Affairs pursuing a research essay or thesis in the area of arms control and
disarmament. The scholarship will be awarded by the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research
on the recommendation of the Director of the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs
and the William Barton Advisory Committee. Endowed 2005 by William Barton.
4. R.D. Richmond Travel Bursary in Aerospace Engineering
Awarded annually by the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research, on the recommendation of the
Chair of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, to outstanding and
deserving graduate students in the Aerospace Engineering program. The purpose of this bursary
is to assist with the costs of travel and accommodation for research or conference trips related to
their studies. Endowed 2006 by R.D. Richmond
5. Kevin Sampson Graduate Scholarship in Cognitive Science
Awarded annually, by the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research, on the recommendation of the
Director of the doctoral program in Cognitive Science, to a student in the doctoral program in
Cognitive Science. Highly qualified students doing research in Human or Artificial Cognition
are eligible and must meet the OGSST requirements. Endowed in 2006 by Kevin Sampson,
BA/73.
6. Vanbots Construction and Ferguson-Neudorf Glass Scholarship in Recycling
Awarded annually to an outstanding graduate student pursuing research in the field of recycling
building construction materials in particular if applicable glass and glazing components. This
scholarship is announced by the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research upon the
recommendation of the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Design. This award was
endowed in 2006 by Vanbots Construction Corporation and Ferguson-Neudorf Glass
Incorporated. It results from work performed on the Bank of Canada during the Exterior Glazing
System Remediation Project which involved a large amount of glass and other building
fenestration material being removed without a suitable recycling application available for these
removed materials.
7. Gabriel Warshaw Memorial Scholarship
Old Terms:
Established in 1998 in honour and memory of Dr. Gabriel David Warshaw. Dr. Warshaw
received his Master of Engineering and Doctor of Philosophy degrees at Carleton University and
was active in the Canadian and international space programs as a partner of Routes, Inc., Ottawa,
until his untimely passing in 1998. Valued at $1,000, this scholarship is awarded annually to an
outstanding graduate student in either the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering or
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, aspiring to a career based on the peaceful and
environmentally respectful applications of these disciplines. The recipient will be selected by a
committee comprised of the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research and a
representative of the donors from candidates recommended by the Chairs of these departments. It
may not be awarded in a given year for lack of a suitable candidate.
New Terms:
Awarded annually to one or more graduate students in either the Department of Systems and
Computer Engineering or Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, aspiring to a career based on
the peaceful and environmentally respectful applications of these disciplines. The scholarship
will be awarded by the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research on the
recommendation of the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Design. Endowed in 1998 in
honour and memory of Dr. Gabriel David Warshaw. Dr. Warshaw received his Master of
Engineering and Doctor of Philosophy degrees at Carleton University and was active in the
Canadian and international space programs as a partner of Routes, Inc., Ottawa, until his
untimely passing in 1998. Revised 2006.
8. Bruce Fletcher Attridge Graduate Bursary in Neuroscience
Awarded annually by the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research on the recommendation of the
Director of the Institute of Neuroscience, to a graduate student entering or proceeding from one
year to another in the Department of Psychology specializing in Neuroscience. Preference will
be given to students specializing in depression and/or grief (bereavement). Recipients must be
Canadian Citizens or permanent residents of Canada (landed immigrant or a protected person)
and must also meet OSAP's Ontario residency requirement. Recipients must demonstrate
financial need. Endowed 2006 by Martha Attridge Bufton and Ian E. Bufton (BA/80).
9. Bijit Bora Graduate Prize in Economics
Awarded annually by the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research, on the recommendation of the
Chair of the Department of Economics, to an outstanding graduate student entering or
proceeding from one year to another in the Department of Economics at Carleton University.
Recipients must be Canadian Citizens or permanent residents of Canada (landed immigrant or a
protected person) and must also meet OSAP's Ontario residency requirement. Recipients must
demonstrate financial need. Endowed in 2006 by family, friends and colleagues in memory of
Bijit Bora, MA/84.
10. Gertrude Neuwirth & Zbigniew A. Jordan Graduate Scholarship
Awarded annually by the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research, to an
outstanding graduate student entering or proceeding from one year to another in the Department
of Sociology and Anthropology. Preference will be given to students furthering Immigration and
Refugee Studies. Endowed in 2006 by the Estate of Gertrud Neuwirth.
11. SFPE National Capital Region Chapter Scholarship for Fire Safety Engineering
Awarded annually, by the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research, on the
recommendation of the Chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering,
to a graduate student in the area of Fire Safety Engineering, who has completed all
required courses for his/her degree and excelled in his/her studies. Endowed 2006 by the
SFPE NCR Chapter and various donors.
12. John McManus Memorial Bursary in Economics
Awarded annually by the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research on the recommendation of the
Chair of the Department of Economics, to a graduate student entering or proceeding from one
year to another pursuing a degree in Economics. Recipients must be Canadian Citizens or
permanent residents of Canada (landed immigrant or a protected person) and must also meet
OSAP's Ontario residency requirement. Recipients must demonstrate financial need. Endowed
2006 by Stephen and Ina Ferris in memory of John C. McManus, a longtime friend and fellow
professor at Carleton University.
13. Al Donaldson Award in Precambrian Geology
Old Terms:
Old terms: Awarded annually, when merited, to provide support for a student engaged in fieldbased B.Sc. thesis research in Precambrian terrains of Canada. Proposals for research on
fundamental unsolved problems will be given preference. Ontario students with demonstrable
financial need are eligible to apply. Recipients will be chosen by the Precambrian Research
Awards Committee, from applications submitted to the Chairman of the Department of Earth
Sciences. Endowed by Professor Donaldson in 1996, the year of his retirement from full-time
teaching at Carleton University, to encourage continuation of research in his principal area of
geological research.
New Terms:
Awarded annually, when merited, to provide support for deserving students engaged in
undergraduate or graduate thesis research in Earth Sciences that involves field-based research of
fundamental unsolved problems within Precambrian regions of Canada. Eligible students may
apply to the Chair of Earth Sciences and must be Canadian Citizens or permanent residents of
Canada (landed immigrant or a protected person), must meet OSAP's Ontario residency
requirements and also demonstrate financial need. Endowed in 1996 by Professor Donaldson, in
the year of his retirement from full-time teaching at Carleton University, to encourage
continuation of research in his principal area of geological research. Revised 2006.
14. Robert L. Clarke Graduate Scholarship in Medical Physics
Awarded annually, on admission, to an outstanding M.Sc. or Ph.D. student(s) in the Department
of Physics specializing in Medical Physics. Eligible recipients may not hold a major external
award including an NSERC, PGS, OGS or OGSST. This scholarship is not renewable. The
scholarship is awarded by the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research upon the recommendation
of the Chair of the Department of Physics. Endowed in 2004 by family, friends and colleagues
of Robert L. Clarke, Distinguished Research Professor, and founder of the Ottawa Medical
Physics Institute (OMPI) to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the OMPI.
15. Harold Bernstein Memorial Award in Physical Chemistry
Old Terms:
Old terms: This grant, valued at approximately $1,000, will be awarded annually to a student
joining the graduate program of the Ottawa-Carleton Institute to study and do research in the
area of physical chemistry. It is a one-time scholarship, and is additional to all other stipends or
scholarships that the student may hold. The award is named in honour of Dr. Harold J.
Bernstein, eminent spectroscopist and researcher, who retired from the National Research
Council, Ottawa, in 1979. Dr. Bernstein served as an adjunct professor of chemistry at Carleton
University from 1970 to 1979.
New Terms:
Awarded annually to an outstanding student entering a graduate program in the Ottawa-Carleton
Chemistry Institute to study and do research in the area of physical chemistry. This scholarship
may be held in addition to all other stipends or scholarships that the student may hold. The
award is named in honour of Dr. Harold J. Bernstein, eminent spectroscopist and researcher, who
retired from the National Research Council, Ottawa, in 1979. Dr. Bernstein served as an adjunct
professor of chemistry at Carleton University from 1970 to 1979. Endowed 1985. Revised 2007.
16. Director's Award for Outstanding Research Essay in Applied Language Studies
This award is presented to a graduate student in the Master of Arts program in the School of
Linguistics and Applied Language Studies (SLALS). Outstanding research essays in applied
language studies are nominated by supervisors and second readers to the SLALS Director's
Award Committee once a year. The winning essay is selected based on merit. The recipient is
awarded by the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research on the recommendation of SLALS
Director's Award Committee.
