Its goal is to introduce the students to the basic ideas of vectors, matrices, and Linear Algebra with the emphasis on applications. Intended Learning Outcomes (ILO) When you have successfully completed this course you are expected to demonstrate a deep understanding of the basic concepts of Analytical Geometry, Linear Algebra, and Calculus; become proficient in techniques of evaluating limits, differentiation, and integration; be able to solve different types of problems in elementary Linear Algebra and Analytic Geometry; be able to apply the notions of Linear Algebra and Calculus to the problems arising in subsequent courses such as Econometrics, Probability Theory, Statistics, and various Management courses. Indicative Course Content You will learn how to solve systems of linear equations, evaluate determinants, and apply them to problems in economics and management. You will also learn basic notions of Calculus (limits, derivatives, and integrals), which has become an important and indispensable tool of thought in almost every field of pure and applied sciences, including social sciences. This course will help you to gain a higher level of mathematical maturity necessary in subsequent courses. Teaching and Learning Methods Homework You will be provided with weekly homework assignments. The lowest two homework scores will be dropped at the end of the semester. Collaboration on homework assignments is allowed and in fact encouraged, but each student is expected to write up his/her own solution. Quizzes: There will be a quiz approximately every week. The worst (or missed) two quizzes will be dropped at the end of the semester. Tests and Exam: There will be 2 Tests — 60 min written examination each, and a comprehensive Final Exam – 80 min written examination. Indicative Assessment Methods and Strategy The graded activities include class participation, homework, quizzes, tests, and the Final Exam. Class participation – 10%, home assignments and quizzes — 20%, Test #1 — 15%, Test #2 — 15%, Final Exam — 40%. Readings / Indicative Learning Resources Course Instructor Mandatory 1. S.
