Design Situation (The background or context)
The design situation is the story or the
problem from where the brief comes from.
Whenever designers spot a need for a
product or item there is always a story behind
it. What is your design situation?
The New South Wales Department of Education is attempting to
address the problem of childhood obesity and inactivity by
encouraging students to become more active in their daily lives. The
Department of Education is promoting the sport of table tennis in all
schools as a fun, easy to play activity that is not affected by weather.
The sport of Table Tennis has been enjoyed by people for over 100
years. However, the activity and the equipment have remained
basically the same. To encourage participation in schools, the
Department of Education is looking for a company that can re-invent
the sport of table tennis and make it more appealing to students by
offering a more modern design of the sport.
Activity 1 Key Information
Activity 1:


Underline the key words from the design situation and re-write it as dot
points in the “key words column”.
Re-write a simplified design situation using your written dot points

Design Brief (statement that presents the task)
The design brief outlines the specific task that will help you to
solve the problem of the design situation. This will in fact
instruct you on what you need to do, but it will not tell you
HOW to solve the problem.
The sport of Table Tennis has been enjoyed by people for over 100 years.
However, the activity and the equipment have remained basically the same. To
encourage participation in schools, the Department of Education is looking for
a company that can re-invent the sport of table tennis by making tables that
are new and appealing to students.
The Department of Education would like the following factors to be considered:
 design and shape of the table.
 storage and assembly.
 safety (traditional table tennis tables have sharp corners that can harm
players during play).
Activity 2:
Write down a “sales pitch” outlining what your company will do and
why your company should be selected to build the tables

Activity 5 Table Tennis Design Ideas
An official table tennis table is rectangular in shape. It is played by either 2 or 4 players at a
time. There are many examples of alternative table tennis designs.
Activity 5:
Your task is to search the internet and find 3 alternative designs for table
tennis tables. Explain the positives and negatives of each design.

Activity 6 Material Research
Activity 6:
Your task is to research the type of materials you will need to build your table
tennis table
Table tennis tables are traditionally made from timber with metal or timber legs
(supports). The type of timber used for the table can be particle board with a smooth
surface layered on top, MDF or ply wood with a low-friction coating painted on it.

Research and consider which type of timber will be the most appropriate for your
table. Factors to consider include:
o most cost effective
o most durable
o bounce of the ball
o safety

Activity 7 Table Tennis Design Sketch
When designing a new product, limitations may be placed on the design and
the designer, by the customer. These are a list of requirements that the
customer wants met within the design of the product. Limitations MUST be
followed as this is what the customer has requested.
The table below lists the limitations that apply to the design of table tennis
tables for schools
Limitations
 Your table must be made from wood (MDF or Ply)
 Your table must be supported by wooden trestle table legs
 You must design your own net configuration
 The table must be able to be stored vertically and flat, and have
no protruding parts
 The table must be able to be easily carried by two people
 You must be able to build your table in one day
 The table needs to be painted (undercoat and top coat)
Activity 7:
Your task is to re-invent the game of table tennis. Sketch 3 different design
ideas, that you may consider building, on the following pages.

Activity 8 Table Tennis Table Rules
Activity 8:
Outline the rules that apply to your game.
For example:
 How many players
 Players must move to the next court after each point
 Server must serve across the court

Activity 9 Table Dimensions
The dimensions of your table will need to be considered when
determining the timber you purchase. For example will you need one
sheet of timber or two sheets of timber and brace them together?
Activity 9:
Complete the following questions regarding the dimensions of your
table.
Table Top
Draw your table below and label the dimensions
Trestle Table Legs
Draw your trestle table legs below and label
the dimensions
What timber will you use for your table?
What timber will you use for the legs of
your table?

complete your table?

to complete your table?
Activity 10 Measuring Activity Levels
Activity 10:
Measure, display and explain the changes in your heart rate, resulting
from a game of table tennis.
Method: Participate in a game of table tennis. Take your heart rate at different
intervals (before the game, 2 minutes into the game, 5 minutes into the game,
end of the game, 1 minute after the game, 2 minutes after the game)
 Take your heart rate for 15 seconds and record. Multiply by 4 to get
beats/minute and record.
 Following the experiment, graph your results on a Cartesian place.
 Explain why any changes in your heart rate occurred (muscles requiring
oxygen to activate, oxygen carried in blood, heart responsible for
pumping blood around the body, heart has to work harder when the
muscles require more oxygen and blood to cope with exercise, decrease
in need for oxygen when exercise is finished, fitter people have different
shape graph to less fit people)
 Use data to enter into microsoft excel and generate their own graph.

Activity 11 Budget
When designing and building a new product, it is essential that
your costs do not exceed your income. If your cost are greater
than the income you earn, you will make a loss. All businesses
are trying to make a profit. Therefore, your income must be
greater than your expenses.
For this task you will be paid $22.50 per/hour. Keep a record of
every hour you have spent designing and building your product.
Record this in the income column.
AND
Keep a record of all the materials and equipment you have
purchased. Record this in the expenses column.
At the conclusion of building your table, calculate the total of
your income and expenses and determine if you have made a
profit.
Activity 11:
Keep a record of your income and expenses in the table
below.
