Definition
 Also called (MTC) - is a form of thyroid carcinoma which
originates from the parafollicular cells (C cells), which produce
the hormone calcitonin. Medullary tumors are the third most
common of all thyroid cancers
 Thyroid cancer is A cancer in the butterfly-shaped gland at the
base of the neck under adams apple (thyroid)
Causes of (MTC)
 Family history of the cancer
(Familial)
 Really no exact cause
(sporadic)
 About 1 out of 3 medullary
thyroid carcinomas (MTCs)
result from inheriting an
abnormal gene known as
familial FMTC
Symptoms
 A lump in the neck, sometimes growing quickly.
 Swelling in the neck.
 Pain in the front of the neck
 Hoarseness
 Trouble swallowing.
 Trouble breathing
Diagnosis
 Diagnosed by cancer markers in blood calcitonin and (CEA)
 Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) — CEA is a substance that
may be made by advanced MTC that should be tested for in
the blood along with calcitonin.
 Ultrasound — A thyroid ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging
study in which sound waves are used to see an accurate
picture of the thyroid gland
 Genetic testing
 Fine needle aspiration (FNA)
Treatment
 Surgery –gives you your best bet at no
reoccurrence
 Chemotherapy
 Radiation
 Ultrasound
Complications
 Cancer spreads to other areas of the body
 Parathyroid glands are accidentally removed during surgery

thyroid live at least 5 years after diagnosis. The 10-year
survival rate is 65%
