UNIVERSITY DAY AWARDS 2010
The Student Learning and Success Teamwork Award recognizes
departments or interdisciplinary groups at Oregon State University
that have demonstrated exceptional teamwork in creating and
sustaining an exemplary teaching and learning environment to
advance the university’s strategic goal of student success and
excellence. This year’s award goes to the College of Health and
Human Sciences’ LinC-Learn Program Team. Team members
include Stephanie Bernell, Marc Braverman, Kathryn Burton, Carol
Caughey, Lizbeth Gray, Brandi Hall, Kim Hannigan-Downs, Anne
Hatley, Kate MacTavish, Kim McAlexander, Jeff McCubbin, Pat
Newport, Mary Pedersen, Leslie Richards, Rick Settersten, Ingrid
Skoog, Alexis Walker and Tony Wilcox.
The Excellence in Graduate Mentoring Award honors graduate
faculty members who have extraordinary records of excellence and
effectiveness in mentoring graduate students. Margaret Burnett, a
Professor in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer
Science with the College of Engineering, is this year’s honoree.
The OSU Academic Advising Award recognizes undergraduate
academic advising by professional faculty rank as well as fixed-term
academic rank faculty whose primary role is advising, and
acknowledges advising as a profession making a pivotal contribution
to the OSU community. In 2010, the honoree is Carol Leder,
professional academic advisor in the College of Business.
The purpose of the Outstanding Faculty Research Assistant
Award is to recognize scholarly achievement and a level of
innovation and effort that far exceeds expectations. Scott Leonard, a
Senior Faculty Research Assistant at the Linus Pauling Institute, and
with the department of nutrition and exercise science in the College of
Health and Human Sciences, is this year’s recipient.

The Herbert F. Frolander Graduate Teaching Assistant Award
recognizes graduate students who have excelled in their capacity as
teaching assistants. For 2010, this honor is given to Chris Friesen, a
PhD student in the department of zoology with the College of
Science.
The OSU Award for Outstanding Service to Persons with
Disabilities recognizes a person who goes above and beyond
requirements of their normal job description to accommodate and
assist persons with disabilities. This year’s award is given to Joanne
Sorte, a senior instructor in the department of human development
and family sciences.
The OSU Exemplary Employee Award honors one professional
faculty member and one classified staff member for their outstanding
performance. This year’s professional faculty member is Dianne
Simpson, office manager in the department of botany and plant
pathology in the College of Agricultural Sciences. The classified staff
member receiving the OSU Exemplary Employee Award is Linda
Renslow, office specialist and volunteer manager for OSU Extension
Service of Lane County.
The Karel J. H. Murphy Professional Faculty Leadership and
Service Award honors a professional faculty member who has
provided outstanding leadership and service throughout their career
both within their department and in programs and organizations
across Oregon State University. Carlea Freeman, assistant to the
associate provost for OSU Outreach and Engagement, is this year’s
honoree.
The University Professional Development Award recognizes those
who excel in supporting and encouraging OSU employees to
participate in professional and/or educational development
opportunities. This year’s recipient is Moira Dempsey, director of the
Academic Success Center.
The Outreach and Engagement Award recognizes significant and
meritorious achievement which enhances reciprocal learning with our
students, partners and stakeholders through outreach and

engagement activities. For 2010, that honor goes to Skip Rochefort,
College of Engineering and Precollege Programs.
The purpose of the OSU Professional Faculty Excellence Award is
to distinguish exceptional service of a faculty member in a role other
than the traditional areas of teaching, research or service. That honor
in 2010 goes to Shelly Signs, director for University Events.
The purpose of the International Service Award is to recognize
exemplary, on-going contributions of OSU faculty and staff to the
internationalization of the university by enhancing student, faculty,
and staff awareness and participation in international education,
research, and related activities Morrie Craig, Professor of biomedical
sciences with the College of Veterinary Medicine, is this year’s
recipient.
The Dar Reese Excellence in Advising Award recognizes
outstanding advising of undergraduate students by a member of the
OSU faculty, as well as demonstrated success in teaching, research
and service. This year the award recognizes Sharon Rosenkoetter,
an associate professor in the department of human development and
family sciences in the College of Health and Human Sciences.
The OSU Faculty Teaching Excellence Award honors unusually
significant and meritorious achievement in teaching and scholarship
which enhances effective instruction. In 2010, the recipient is Jeff
Chang, assistant professor in the department of botany and plant
pathology with the College of Agricultural Sciences.
The D. Curtis Mumford Faculty Service Award recognizes
individuals for exceptional, ongoing, dedicated and unselfish concern
for and service to OSU faculty. This year’s honoree is Karyle Butcher,
Donald and Delpha Campbell University Librarian and director of the
OSU Press.
The Richard M. Bressler Senior Faculty Teaching Award is given
to an individual with longtime service to Oregon State University who
has demonstrated a major commitment to undergraduate instruction

over an extended period of time. This year’s recipient is Lisa
Sarasohn, a Professor in the department of history with the College of
Liberal Arts.
The Elizabeth P. Ritchie Distinguished Professor Award
recognizes an individual for outstanding undergraduate teaching;
research, particularly related to improvement of instruction; and
professional leadership. In 2010, the honoree is Toni Doolen, an
associate professor in the School of Mechanical, Industrial and
Manufacturing Engineering in the College of Engineering.
The OSU Alumni Association Distinguished Professor Award is
given to the person who demonstrates outstanding professional
achievement through teaching and scholarship, service to the
university and the community, and professional leadership, nationally
and internationally. This year, the honor goes to Lynda Ciuffetti, chair
of the department of botany and plant pathology in the College of
Agricultural Sciences.
The Promising Scholar Award recognizes junior faculty whose
outstanding scholarship has been recognized by peers, and who
have demonstrated a high level of accomplishment over a relatively
short period of time at OSU. The 2010 recipients are Emily Ho,
associate professor in the department of nutrition and exercise
sciences in the College of Health and Human Sciences, and Todd
Mockler, assistant professor in the department of botany and plant
pathology in the College of Agricultural Sciences.
The OSU Impact Award for Outstanding Scholarship recognizes
OSU faculty who have demonstrated outstanding scholarship in a
specific project or activity resulting in substantial impact beyond the
university setting. This year’s recipient is Annette von Jouanne,
professor in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer
Science in the College of Engineering, for her contribution to the
success of the Wave Energy Research Program.
