Math 97 – PLANE GEOMETRY
Course Syllabus
Fall 2014 – Cuyamaca College
Instructor: Sarah Rodriguez
Email: [email protected]
Time and Locations: MW 4:00 – 5:50 pm in room H-134
Office Hours: By appointment
Course Description:
Introduces essential vocabulary, properties and characteristics of geometric objects and geometric constructions. The
concepts of plane geometry are developed inductively and then deductively. Computer-facilitated instruction offers a
dynamic presentation of geometric concepts. Credit/No Credit only. Non-associate degree applicable.
Student Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
1) Identify basic plane geometric figures from an accurate visual representation and/or from their properties.
2) Demonstrate an accurate knowledge of basic vocabulary as it relates to plane geometry.
3) Use techniques established in class to compute accurate measurements of both line segments and angles.
4) Identify the properties of and describe the relationships between plane geometric figures.
5) Use techniques established in class to compute perimeters and areas of basic plane geometric figures.
6) Determine missing sides and/or angles of right triangles using special properties of right triangles, basic right triangle
trigonometric ratios, and the Pythagorean Theorem.
7) Apply the properties of similarity to solve a variety of application problems and to discriminate between similar and
dissimilar geometric figures.
8) Write justifications for conjectures or theorems related to geometric properties or relationships using both inductive
and deductive reasoning.
9) Investigate geometric relationships; formulate conjectures about geometric relationships; collect, analyze, and
interpret data related to geometric figures.
10) Perform compass and straight edge constructions which include copying geometric figures, bisecting angles, locating
various important points related to triangles.
Course Prerequisite:
Credit in Math 90 or the equivalent.
Text and Materials Required: (Bring these to EVERY class meeting)
1) Geometry: Fundamental Concepts and Applications by Alan Bass
2) A Scientific calculator or graphing calculator.
3) Graph paper, straight edge ruler, compass, and protractor.
Class Policies:
1. You are expected to attend each class, arriving on time and remaining for the entire class. If this is not possible it is your
responsibility to discuss with the instructor the reasons for arriving late or leaving early. Please grant me the courtesy of
letting me know at the beginning of class if you will need to leave early.
2. You may be dropped from the class if you are absent frequently. If this becomes a problem, please come and speak with
me. I may decide to drop you unless you convince me of your motivation to stay, and your grades support this
motivation.
3. You are responsible for getting class notes from other classmates and getting any schedule changes or other class
announcements from classmates or the instructor on days missed from the class. Any changes and class announcements
will be made known in class.
Any information above may change at the discretion of the instructor at any time. This course adheres to the policies outlined in the
Cuyamaca College catalogue. For further information, see Academic Policies stated in the catalogue.
4. You are expected to be courteous to each other and to the instructor. You will be asked to leave the class for display of
behavior the instructor deems as disruptive to the learning environment. You are encouraged to establish study partners
with whom you may study and prepare for exams.
5. If you feel you need more help than I or other classmates can offer there is free tutoring available in the STEM
Achievement Center. The hours are M - Th 9:00 am – 7:00 pm and Friday 9:00 am – 12:00 pm.
6.
You are responsible for your own learning. You should strive to make sense of mathematics. Do not settle for rules and
formulas unless those rules and formulas are constructed while trying to make sense of mathematics, or, if from other
sources, are fully understood. You should expect me to provide the learning environment and the opportunities you need
in order to learn in this manner.
7. You are expected to work actively with your peers, sharing, taking and giving, listening and explaining, questioning and
answering. You are responsible for being prepared for participation in class discussions and in group work, and for
assisting your peers to come to an understanding of mathematics.
8. You are expected to keep up to date, study the text and do the homework. The usual rule of thumb for college courses is
a minimum: Two hours of study out of class for every hour in class. You should spend at least this amount of time
studying for this class.
Evaluation:
This class is a 3 unit course. Your semester grade will be based on the different categories listed below.
 HOMEWORK
10%
 CLASSWORK
10%
 QUIZZES
10%
 EXAMS
50%
 FINAL
20%
Any students seeking an "I" (incomplete) for a grade must file a petition with me citing "unforeseeable, emergency, and
justifiable" reasons for this grade.
Your final grade is based on the percentage of the number of points you have acquired over the semester to the total number
of points possible. An A = 90 - 100%, B = 80 – 89.9%, C = 70 – 79.9%, D = 60 – 69.9%, F = 59.9% and below. (A,B,C are passing
with credit and D,F are no credit).
Homework: I will collect assigned sections of homework every Wednesday at the beginning of class. The sections will be
from the previous week’s lessons. For full credit your homework must be complete and show ALL necessary work.
Class work: Class work will come in the form of in-class projects, group work, constructions, independent practice sheets, and
other possible activities.
Quizzes and Exams: EVERY Wednesday there will be either a quiz or an exam scheduled. I will allow exam corrections to be
made for up to 10 points (depending on how many was missed). The corrections must be submitted within one week from
the day the exam was passed back and it must show all work including explanations if necessary.
Final Exam: In order to pass this class with credit, the student must earn a D or better on the final exam and an overall grade
in the class of at least 70%.
No makeups and No late work: This applies to all categories above. However, I will drop your lowest quiz, homework, and
class work scores. Contact me ASAP if you have an emergency situation, as I may allow you to make up the missed work. Do
not assume, you must contact me via e-mail.
Final Note: Attendance, participation, and a subjective instructor impression of a student's work may be used in assigning a
final grade to borderline cases.
Any information above may change at the discretion of the instructor at any time. This course adheres to the policies outlined in the
Cuyamaca College catalogue. For further information, see Academic Policies stated in the catalogue.
