THYROIDSCREEN(TSH) TheThyroidͲStimulatingHormonetest,orTSH,isabloodtestusedtodetectproblemsaffectingthethyroidgland.An underͲactivethyroidgland(hypothyroidism)cancausesymptomssuchasweightgain,tiredness,dryskin, constipation,afeelingofbeingtoocold,orfrequentmenstrualperiods.Anoveractivethyroid(hyperthyroidism)can causesymptomssuchasweightloss,rapidheartrate,nervousness,diarrhea,afeelingofbeingtoohot,orirregular menstrualperiods.AccordingtotheNationalWomen’sHealthInformationCenter,about1in8Americanwomenwill developathyroiddisorder.AnunderͲactivethyroid(hypothyroidism)ismorecommoninwomenthanmenandoften hitshardestduringpregnancy,midlife,andolderage. WhatshouldIdowithmyresults? Itisalwaysrecommendedthatyoumeetwithadoctortodeterminewhatyourlaboratorytestresultsmeantoyou. Yourdoctorwillreviewallofyourtestresultsand,combinedwithyourhealthhistory,heorshewillbeabletoprovide anaccuratepictureofyourhealthstatus. IfanyofyourresultswereabnormaloroutͲofͲrange:IfyourresultwasabnormallyhighitmayindicateanunderͲ activethyroidgland.AnabnormallylowTSHresultcanindicateanoveractivethyroidgland(hyperthyroidism)or excessiveamountsofthyroidhormonemedicationinthosewhoarebeingtreatedforanunderͲactive(orremoved) thyroidgland.Whetherhighorlow,anabnormalTSHindicatesanexcessordeficiencyintheamountofthyroid hormoneavailabletothebody,butitdoesnotindicatethereason.Aswithanyabnormalresults,it’simportantthat youdiscusstheirimplicationswithyourphysician.
