Supplemental data
Table 1. Clinical and immunological patients’ characteristics, described by mean ± standard deviation,
frequency, median and interquartile range (IQR) when appropriate. Patients were separated into two
groups, according to the development or not of sepsis. Immunological data did not verify normality
(using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test). Groups were compared using the independent paired t test for
continuous parametric variables (*), the Mann-Whitney U test for continuous non parametric
variables (‡), or the chi-square test for categorical data (▪). A p-value < 0.05 was considered
significant. Statistical analyses were performed with R version 3.0.2 software (R foundation for
Statistical Computing, Vienna, Austria).

Regarding pneumonia, when a gram-positive bacteria was involved (i.e. pure or mixed infection), the
bacteria responsible was either a Methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (80%) or a
Streptococcus pneumoniae (20%). The varieties of gram-negative bacteria involved were larger:
Haemophilus influenzae, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae or oxytoca.
