Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) IMRT has been used safely and effectively against a wide variety human cancers, including metastases to the liver. If IMRT is safe and effective in reducing the size of HCCs in patients with cirrhosis, it may be a new alternative to traditional minimally invasive treatment strategies. IMRT, in contrast to standard radiation, permits the radiation oncologist to vary both the intensity and the angle at which a radiation beam is delivered to the patient. IMRT permits the delivery of a high dose of radiation to a tumor while significantly reducing the dose to surrounding normal tissue. IMRT has been used to treat a wide variety of tumors, including: brain cancer, lung cancer, and cancers that have metastasized to the liver. IMRT was found to be effective and safe when offered to such patients. We offer IMRT as a minimally invasive treatment option for patients with small hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs).
