Example: Review for Quiz 2 (basic chemistry and conversions)
Given: We know that we emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere when we drive our cars.
Approximate gasoline as mostly octane, C8H18. The molecular weight of gasoline is about
110 kg/kmol and its specific gravity is about 0.75. The molecular weight of CO2 is about
44.0 kg/kmol.
To do: Approximating the combustion of gasoline as ideal combustion of octane, estimate
how many kg of CO2 you emit into the atmosphere for every gallon of gasoline you burn.
Solution: This conversion factor is useful: 1 m3 = 264.17 gallons.
