Warm Up
Have students write on scrap paper to answer. Ask students to list three things that are circular. Give students 15
seconds and then ask how many of them have pizza on their list. It is fairly likely that all students in the room will
have pizza on their lists. Ask students how many pieces pizzas are often cut into. Also ask what the measure of
the angle at the tip of each slice is when the pizza is cut into 6, 8, and 10 equal slices. Explain to students that in
this lesson they will work with the central angle of a circle (the tip of the pizza slice) and also with the circular arc
(the crust).
In this exploration, students use dynamic geometry software to measure circular arcs.

Have students work in pairs to complete parts

This exploration is a nice review of trigonometric ratios.
Students must first construct each sketch. To find the measure of each circular arc, they need to measure the
central angle
How will we tell if we’re learning it correctly?
Assessment Methods: Exit ticket quiz
Checks for Understanding: Students ask questions when they’re unsure about materials


Give students time to answer Questions 2 and 3.
For Question 3, there are different strategies that students could use to draw the circular arcs. Have
students share and discuss the various methods.
What do I need to be successful?
Materials: Laptop / Website provided /notes
What do I need to before next class?
Follow Up/HW: assign homework
What are we learning?
Areas of Circles and Sectors
Daily Objective: SWBAT find areas of circles and sectors
TEKS/AP/Standards: G.12.C
How will we learn it?
Learning Activities:
Friday
Display the iconic Pac-Man symbol and ask whether they are familiar with it. Introduce the area of
circle and sector with the icon.
Guided notes and practice examples.
Students do independent practice on similar problems.
How will we tell if we’re learning it correctly?
Assessment Methods: QUIZ
Checks for Understanding: Partner corrections during practice
What do I need to be successful?
Materials: Packet problems/notes
What do I need to before next class?
Follow Up/HW: assign homework on the packet
