Title Completing the Square Skill Using Text as Evidence to Support an Argument EBA Activity Evidence Scavenger Hunt Claims You may use the following claims for this activity: The problem is solved correctly. The problem is solved incorrectly. Procedure 1. Instruct students to look at the worked examples, first checking for the correct solution and then identifying the error that occurred in the steps. 2. Proceed with a standard Evidence Scavenger Hunt activity. Timing/Pacing This occurs after the beginning of the unit. Prerequisite knowledge includes finding the roots of a quadratic function by graphing and factoring, taking square roots, and solving multi-step equations. After this lesson, students will learn how to find the roots of a quadratic function with the quadratic formula. This activity takes 25 minutes. This activity occurs after review of the procedure for completing the square and individual practice. It continues until the end of the lesson. Notes Errors in the worked examples could include: Forgetting to make sure that the coefficient of the quadratic term x2 is 1 Algebraic errors Writing complex numbers incorrectly for an equation with no real solution Forgetting to add (b/2)2 to the other side of the equation Forgetting + or – when taking the square root of both sides Forgetting to move the constant c to the other side of the equation before completing the square Errors with fractional coefficients Follow Up Activities To add an oral component, this activity could be followed by a Using Evidence Soapbox. Text Standard Algebra 2 Text, worked examples (some solved correctly, some solved incorrectly).
