ATOMIC MASS-ATOMIC NUMBER VOCAB
MATTER
•anything that has mass and
takes up space
ELEMENT
•a pure substance that cannot
be broken down into other
substances by chemical or
physical means
ATOM
•the basic particle from which
all substances are made
CHEMICAL SYMBOL
•short representation for the
name of each element
(ex: H is the symbol for
Hydrogen)
PERIODIC TABLE
•a chart of all the elements
arranged by atomic number,
and as a result showing
patterns of properties by
columns
ATOMIC NUMBER
•the number of protons in the
nucleus of an atom
ATOMIC MASS
•average mass of all the
isotopes (different versions) of
an element; sum of the protons
and neutrons in an atom
PROTON
•positively charged particle that
is part of an atom’s nucleus
NEUTRON
•a neutrally charged (no
charge) particle that is part of
an atom’s nucleus
ELECTRON
•a negatively charge particle
that orbits the nucleus of an
atom in the electron cloud
PERIOD
•a row of elements on the
periodic table
GROUP
•a column of elements on the
periodic table; share properties
