CCTV | Tech Note: VIP X and USB Hard Drive
Tech Note:
VIP X and USB Hard Drive
f Local storage for VIP X series
f Reliable USB controller and hard disk
f Robust 3.5-inch aluminum enclosure
with external power supply
f Hard disk with continuous recording
f Replay on any PC without additional
software
A USB hard drive connected to a VIP X1 or VIP X2 provides
local storage where recording on a central VIDOS-NVR or an
iSCSI storage system is not needed nor applicable.
The USB hard drive assembly can be unplugged from an
encoder to archive footage of a particular situation, or
to use it offline for further investigation, etc.
The first combination of USB controllers and hard disks that
have passed all required performance and reliability tests
are:
The USB hard drive can be connected to any PC and
recordings replayed without the need to install special
software. The viewing software is stored on the hard
disk together with the recordings.

This recommendation list may be extended when other
reliable controllers and hard disks have been successfully
tested.
250 GB of recording capacity provides sufficient space for
several days of linear or ring recording for up to two
cameras on a VIP X2. This includes audio in highest quality,
as well as providing 128 tracks per camera for pre and postalarm recording.
Most important, this combination of USB controller and hard
disk provides the reliability needed for local recording from
a VIP X encoder. It has been carefully selected to match the
demanding 24/7 USB storage usage, common to industrial
and commercial applications, but unusual in consumer
environments. To make the list of recommended devices,
the USB controller and built-in hard disk have been tested
over long periods under the same conditions that VIP X units
operate in.
All VIP X1 and VIP X2 units that run firmware version
2.0, or higher, support USB hard drives. Pre v2.0
firmware VIP X units may require a firmware update to
provide this functionality. Firmware updates are
available on the Bosch Security Systems website.
Features
• 160 or 250 GB of local storage capacity for VIP X1 or
VIP X2 units in 3.5-inch, robust aluminium housing
• Linear or ring recording for each camera attached to
VIP X1 or VIP X2 units
• Pre and post-alarm recording of up to 128 events per
camera
• ANR functionality supported with central recording on
VIDOS-NVR
• Replay of recordings on any PC without installing
software due to retrieval software stored on drive

Technical Specifications *
Use the attached cables to install the USB hard drive close to
the VIP X unit you want to record from.
Mechanical
Dimensions (H x W x D)
Always power the USB hard drive before connecting it to the
VIP X USB port. The VIP X is not able to power the USB hard
drive via the USB port.
Weight
Take care not to exceed the specifications on temperature and
environmental conditions.
Caution:
Apply careful handling to the unit, don’t drop it
nor expose it to extensive vibrations.

Configure the VIP X unit using the supplied web browser
interface or the Configuration Manager software.
The setup is the same as for any other hard disk media in
Bosch IP network video products. The USB hard drive must be
attached to the VIP X unit prior to setup.
