• This time series training and development
course is for community and faith based
organizational leaders.
• The course is designed to provide
development in three areas: individual,
organizational, and community.

• Each program curriculum track has at least 12
workshops that are presented using social
media to include GoToMeetings, YouTube and
Black Board.
• Each program curriculum track will be recorded
and placed on the Woodson Center web site for
viewing in the convenience of your home or
office. The address is www.woodsoncenter.org.
• Participants will be able to get Continuing
Education Units for each program curriculum
workshop upon completion of quizzes at the end
of each module.

• Managing Business Ethically and Responsibly
– Knowing what is right and wrong and behaving
accordingly is what ethical behavior is all about.
– Ethics are standards of moral behavior, that is,
behavior that is accepted by society as right or wrong.
– In fact, it continue to be ranked the most important
attribute of people coming to work for organizations –
such as nonprofit organizations.
– Legality is only the first ethical standard.
– Social responsibility is an organizational concern for
the welfare of society as a whole.

• Personal Ethics begin at home.
– Is it legal?
– Is it balanced?
– How will it make me feel about myself?
– Ethical decisions involve a moral choice.

• Organizational Ethics Begins At The Top
– Ethics is caught more than it is taught.
– Any trust and cooperation between workers
and managers must be based on fairness,
honesty, openness, and moral integrity.
– Ethics help to maintain good reputations;
keep existing customers; attract new
customers; avoid law suits; reduce employee
turnover; and avoid government intervention.

• Setting Organizational Ethical Standards
• Two Major categories:
– Compliance-based ethics codes
• Prevent unlawful behavior
• Increases control
• Penalizing wrong doers.
– Integrity-based ethics codes.
• Defines the organization’s values.
• Create an environment that support ethically sound behavior
• Stress a shared accountability among employees.

• Six Step Approach To Developing Ethical
Policies and Procedures:
– Top management must adopt and unconditionally
support an explicit code of conduct.
– Employees must understand that expectations for
ethical behavior begin at the top and that senior
management expects all employees to act
accordingly.
– Managers and others must be trained to consider the
ethical implications of all business decisions.
– An ethics Point of Contact or office must be
established.

• Six Step Approach To Developing Ethical
Policies and Procedures (Continued):
– Outsiders such as suppliers, subcontractors,
distributors, and customers must be told
about the ethics policies and procedures.
– The ethics policies and procedures must be
enforced. It is important to back up any ethics
program with timely action if any rules are
broken.

• Organizational Social Responsibility
– Defined, corporate social responsibility is an
organization’s concern for the welfare of
society.
– Philanthropy – includes charitable donations
to nonprofits of all types.
– Responsibility – includes everything from
hiring minorities, making safe products,
minimizing pollution, using energy wisely, and
provide a safe work environment.

• Defined, social auditing is a systematic
evaluation of an organization’s progress
toward implementing programs that are
socially responsible and responsive.
– Social conscious investors.
– Environmentalists.
– Union Officials
