This photograph taken in August 1864 at Petersburg, Virginia, is Company F of the 114th Pennsylvania Infantry, who are Zouaves (Algerian Muslim volunteers that originally served in the French Army). 1st Prize $400; 2nd $300; 3rd $200; 4th $100 DEADLINE: October 31st, 2011 Research Paper Guidelines: *All papers must be 7 pages of narrative in length including footnotes (APA format) plus a cover page containing the paper title, author, and high school. * Paragraphs must be double-spaced using 12-pt. New Times Roman font, with one-inch margins all around. * The paper must contain at least three (3) primary sources, such as diaries, newspapers, autobiographies, government documents, etc. from that era. * Photographs or illustrations can be included as additional pages to the end of your paper in an appendix. Do not insert them into your narrative. Be sure to cite your sources! Possible Paper Topics: New technologies used in the war; the importance of railroads; naval warfare; forts and their designs; foreign soldiers serving in Union or Confederate armies; the treatment of POWs; African Americans as slaves or freemen during the conflict; how the lives of women and children were affected; Native Americans and their perspectives on the war; medical care and treatment of wounded soldiers; the foreign policy of the Union or Confederacy; propaganda versus freedom of the press; wartime finance and economics; impact on the environment/ecosystem; music and dance during the war.
