What is Propaganda? Target audience Propaganda targets a particular group of people. This poster seeks to encourage young men to join the armed forces. One sided Propaganda tries to deceive people by telling only one side of the story. Every soldier in this poster is smiling. It does not show anyone worried or sad about going to war. Supporting a particular cause Clear message Propaganda supports a cause. This poster portrays the public supporting the soldiers. Some propaganda posters supported the war effort by being negative towards the Germans. Propaganda has a clear message. The purpose of this poster is to recruit men to the army. The images and text combine to create a clear message. Ideas for a task The students should think of their own slogans to fill in the gaps. The students must choose a slogan to match the images or the theme of the poster. e.g. Image of a young woman – The slogan suggests that women should encourage husbands and sons to go to war. At the end of the lesson pupils can compare their slogan with the original.
