Information Sheet UN No. 1977 24 Hazard No. 2T Nitrogen, Refrigerated Liquid Physical Data Chemical Symbol N2 Boiling Point -195.8oC Relative Density (Air=1) 0.967 Molecular Weight 28.013 Critical Temperature -147.1oC Flashpoint Non flammable Density of Gas @ 101.3 kPa & 15oC 1.170 kg/m3 Density of Liquid (B.Pt.) 809 kg/m3 Specific Volume @ 101.3 kPa & 15oC 0.855 m3/kg Typical Analysis Product Name N2 Ref Liq N2 >99.999% O2 <5 ppm Moisture <10 ppm Storage Tanks Tank Size Range >1,000 - < 60,000 lt Description Nitrogen is an almost totally inert gas which is both colourless and odourless. Liquid Nitrogen is non flammable and does not support combustion. Typical uses • Purging • Tyre inflation • Inert atmospheres • Food packaging • Gauge calibration • Metal degassing • Aerosol propellant • Hydraulic systems • Photo processing • Mixed with H2 or He for leak detection • Food freezing • Plastic forming • Pipeline testing • Air tools • Wine sparging/inerting • Fire fighting 13 77 72 www.supagas.com.au Nitrogen, Refrigerated Liquid continued • Freezing • Low temperature packaging and storage Main hazards • Is an extremely low temperature at -196°C. • May replace oxygen in the inhaled air and cause asphyxiation if the amount of oxygen inhaled is reduced to below 18%, it becomes dangerous. Precautions in Use • Only use Nitrogen in well ventilated area thus attempting to prevent the accumulation of nitrogen in high concentrations (oxygen content for air should be maintained above 18%). • Do not apply direct heat or give alcohol or cigarettes. • Protect frozen parts from infection. N.B. If further information is required on the safe handling of Liquid Nitrogen please contact your local Supagas Store. SDS Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are available for gases supplied by Supagas, please check our website www.supagas.com.au or contact your local Supagas outlet. Issued Date 29/05/2015 • When handling liquid nitrogen supply systems wear full overalls, full face mask, and fitted leather gloves. First Aid If victim is conscious: • Move victim to uncontaminated area to breathe fresh air. • Keep victim warm and quiet. • Call doctor and report the patients condition. If victim is unconscious: • Move victim to uncontaminated area and give assisted respiration. When breathing is restored: • Keep victim warm and quiet. • Call doctor and report the patients condition. Cold burns/Frostbite: • Flush with luke warm water for minimum of 10 minutes then treat as thermal burns. • Seek hospital attention for all but the most superficial cases. 13 77 72 www.supagas.com.au
