E. Scientific Notation
(pp. 74–75)
Any real number can be written in standard form or in scientific notation. A number
written in scientific notation is in the form c 3 10n, where c is greater than or equal to
1 and less than 10, and n is an integer. For example, the number two million can be
written in standard form as 2,000,000, or in scientific notation as 2 3 106. The number
five thousandths can be written in standard form as 0.005, or in scientific notation as
5 3 1023.
