Things to Know for the Chapter 9 Mitosis & Meiosis Test Why is a cell’s size limited? Where are centrioles found? Why is meiosis an important process? Be able to determine diploid and haploid numbers. Know ALL of the stages of mitosis and what occurs in each of the stages. Ex: Metaphase – chromosomes line up on the equator. Know ALL the stages of meiosis and what occurs in each of the stages. What is the gamete produced by a male called? A female? How many sperm cells are produced in meiosis? Egg cells? Study your quiz from mitosis. Many questions will resemble this format and the format of your meiosis quiz. You will need to identify drawings of the different stages of mitosis and meiosis. You will also have to place them in the order of their occurrence. Vocabulary – What is each of the following? Chromatin Chromosome Cell cycle Cytokinesis Mitosis Centromere Sister chromatids Spindle Cancer Haploid Zygote Meiosis Asexual reproduction Fertilization Diploid Nondisjunction Crossing over – when does it occur too! What holds two sister chromatids together? Know centrioles are found in animal cells and NOT in plant cells. Know cell walls are found in plants, bacteria and fungi cells, NOT animal cells. Know the spindle is the football shaped structure consisting of thin fibers. It is is responsible for moving the chromosomes/sister chromatids. What is the end result of mitosis? What is the end result of meiosis? What is the difference between autosomes and sex chromosomes? Example Drawings: Be able to identify what is occurring in each diagram and its stage. The diagrams on the test will not be identical to these. Meiosis Mitosis
