Simple Ionic Compounds Dice Activity
Purpose:
Balance and name the chemical formulas of randomly rolled combination of ions. It is designed to
reinforce formula writing, determining oxidation numbers, and naming.
Materials:
Student worksheet
Binary compound naming rules
Anion (white die)
Cation cubes (colored die)
Dice Key
Pre-lab Questions:
1. Define oxidation number (charge).
Procedure:
1. Roll the cation die and record the formula in column 2. Then, write the proper name in column
3 using the periodic table.
2. Roll the anion die and record the formula in column 4. Then, write the proper name in column
5 using the periodic table.
3. Take the formula from column 2 and 4 and place in column 6 and balance, by crossmultiplying, using the binary compound naming rules.
Step 1: Ca+2 + Br –1
Step 2: Ca+2 + Br –1
Step 3: CaBr2
4. If you roll the same compound twice, re-roll the cation and anion dice until a new compound is
rolled.
5. Write the correct name for the compound using the Writing Chemical Names sheet and place
in column 7.
6. Repeat steps 1 –5.

Data Analysis:
1. Did all elements that came from Group 6A have the same oxidation number? What is/are the
number(s)?
2. Did all elements from Group 7A have the same oxidation number? What is/are the number(s)?
3. Did you find that all elements found in the same column have the same oxidation number?
What was the oxidation number for Group 2A elements?
