EXPERTISE GUIDANCE PASSION Lending Case Study How Collins SBA’s Damian Vout lends his unique expertise to seeking the right finance solutions for our clients. Damian Vout is not your average Lending Consultant — he’s a salt of the earth guy who lives with his family on a fiveacre property where he has dabbled in a bit of ‘disastrous’ home brewing. His careful attention to the farm crosses over to the way he looks after his clients, bringing a genuine understanding of the ‘bigger picture’ to each unique situation. Damian spent 23 years in banking before he realised that selling financial products to clients was not particularly fulfilling. He wanted to help people plan for, and achieve, their financial goals. Collins SBA provided this opportunity. “My approach is to break down each job or project by using ‘SSS’ which is Strategy, Structure and Solution,” says Damian. Strategy is understanding where you want to be in three to five years; Structure is implementing the best structure to support the strategy; and Solution ties the first two together. Where Damian’s expertise comes into play is in helping his clients define their strategy (knowing which structure will support their chosen strategy) and being able to recommend the right provider to offer the best solution. “The difference is our level of effort and interest in a client’s strategy and structure which has synergy with the overall Collins SBA philosophy,” says Damian. “Time and effort spent leads to better servicing of our clients’ needs should tax or financial planning issues arise, which is in line with our firm’s ‘one stop shop’ philosophy. It is a truly integrated service. “I’ve never come across a firm that puts this together as well as Collins SBA. We establish a relationship with clients, as opposed to walking into a bank and doing business their way, which is often just signing up for a product.” One of Damian’s success stories was to help a client who had previously only dreamed of acquiring their own commercial property, “I used my SSS methodology to peel back the layers and find out what was really needed,” says Damian. “The client previously didn’t think they could obtain the loan, so they were over the moon when we sourced finance.” A client who operates buses was referred to Damian who helped them obtain finance for a new coach to expand their business and tap into the cruise ship tourism market, “Our client walked in to see their accountant about a few financials and ended up buying a bus,” says Damian. The key to Collins SBA’s service is its holistic approach: “Many firms provide accounting and financial advice but are unable to deliver, so clients have to shop around.
