Ziegler Salmon High School Room 30 [email protected] (208)-756-2415 COURSE DESCRIPTION Eileen Brillon Salmon High School Room 28 [email protected] (208)-756-2415 Geometry is the study of the structure of mathematics and how it applies to two and three dimensional shapes and objects . The attention of this course is on methods of solving problems in the Real Number System. The student will develop skill in the application of algebraic concepts on linear, quadratic equations. ENDURING UNDERSTANDINGS/ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS `Identify and model points lines and planes. Measure segments and determine accuracy of measurements. Calculate distance and find the midpoint between point. Measure and classify angles. Identify polygons and find their perimeters. Make conjectures and determine whether it is true or false. Use deductive reasoning. Verify algebraic and geometric conjectures. Write proofs involving segments, angles, triangles (SSS,SAS.ASA, AAS,HL,HA,LL, or LA), intersections, bisected angles and segments, altitudes, medians, angle bisectors, vertical angles, mathematical identities, similarity (AA, or SSS), Hinge Theroem, slope of a line, parallel, perpendicular, center of circles, and chords, and arcs. Classify triangles. Apply the triangle angle Sum Theorem. Identify corresponding parts of congruent triangles (CPCTC). Use properties of Isosceles Triangles. Write coordinate proofs. Identify and use perpendicular bisectors. Apply properties of inequalities relating angle size to the size of the opposite size in a triangle. Apply Triangle Inequality Theorem and SSS and SAS inequality. Identify similar triangles. Recognize and use proportional parts, corresponding perimeters, altitudes, angle bisectors, and medians of similar triangles to solve problems. Identify the characteristics of fractals and nongeometric iteration. Solve problems using the geomertric mean, the Pythagorean Theorem, and its converse. Use trigonometric ratios to solve right triangles problems. Solve triangles using the Law of Sines. These assignments will be worth 10-50 points each. All work must be shown or the student will take a zero for the assignment. These daily assignments are due the following day they are assigned at the beginning of class. Tests will be given at the end of each chapter. These tests will be worth 100-800 points depending on the length of the chapter. Quizzes may also be given at different intervals throughout the year. You will be notified in advance. Labs are hands-on application activities worth 10-100 points. There will be a final exam at the end of the year. It will cover everything we have gone over for the year. Grading The grade that you will earn in this class will be calculated by dividing the total number of points earned by the total number of points possible for each grading period. The homework, activities, and lab grade will be worth one-half of the grade and tests will be worth one-half. Come prepared for class: book, paper, pencil, etc. Assignments must be done in pencil. No food or drink allowed. Water bottles are acceptable. No cell phones out or on. Consequences for Breaking Rules You will get one warning for any of the above violation and/or school rules that are not majors. For your first offense, you will receive a 30-minute detention and Step 1. For your second offense, you will receive a 60-minute detention and Step 2. For your third offense, you will receive a 90-minute detention and Step 3. For your fourth offense, you will be expelled from the class.
