Calamity Day #1 For this calamity day activity, you will be creating flashcards (18) for the upcoming unit on probability and statistics. These flashcards can be made from index cards or cut out from pieces of notebook/printer paper. On one side of the flashcard, you will write the term found in the oval at the top of each page. On the reverse side of that card, you will write the definition for that term found in the rectangle. Although there may be additional information on each page (inside a circle or circles), that information should not be included on your flashcard. It is only meant to provide you with a little more information about the term. Calamity Day #1 "Front" of your flashcard The Probability Scale Li lly ua po e bl Eq Im i ss ke ly "Back" of your flashcard Additional information... not intended to be on your flashcard The closer the probability is to 0, the less likely the event will occur. The closer the probability is to 1, the more likely the event will occur. Calamity Day #1 The ratio of the number of favorable outcomes to the total number of possible outcomes. or 50% Calamity Day #1 Experimental Probability The ratio of the number of times an event occurs to the total number of times that the activity is performed... this is probability based on what DID happen. Calamity Day #1 Theoretical Probability The ratio of the number of equally likely outcomes in an event to the total number of possible outcomes... this is probability based on what SHOULD happen outcomes Calamity Day #1 Compound Event A combination of two or more simple events. The prob. of The prob. of AND rolling 4 on a AND a 3 card. Calamity Day #1 Independent Event When the outcome of one event does not affect the outcome of another event. = Prob(A)Prob(B) The prob. of AND rolling 4 on a Calamity Day #1 Dependent Event When the outcome of one affects the outcome of another event. = Prob(A) The prob. of AND a 3 card. Calamity Day #1 Measures of Center Includes the Mean, Median, & Mode. Calamity Day #1 The sum of the data values divided by the number of items. 15/5 = 3 Set of Data: 3, 4, 5 3+4+5 The mean Calamity Day #1 The middle data value when the values are written in numerical order. 1+2+3+4 = 10 Median 1, 2, 3, 4 Median 10/4 = Calamity Day #1 The data value that occurs the most often. , 4, 6, 3, 8 The mode The mode is 4 and 2. There is no mode. Calamity Day #1 Measures of Variation A measure that describes how spread out or scattered a set of data. It is also known as measures of spread. Calamity Day #1 The difference between the greatest data value and the least data value. , 9, 10, 1, 5, 9, The range The range The range Calamity Day #1 The values that divide the data in four equal parts. 1,3,3,4,5,6,6,7,8,8 Calamity Day #1 Lower (1st) Quartile The median of the lower half of data. 1,3,3,4,5,6,6,7,8,8 Calamity Day #1 Upper (3rd) Quartile The median of the upper half of data. 1,3,3,4,5,6,6,7,8,8 Calamity Day #1 Interquartile Range The difference of the upper quartile and the lower quartile. 1,3,3,4,5,6,6,7,8,8 Calamity Day #1 Deviation The average distance between each data value and the mean. Find the mean of the differences Find the 2,2,3,4,4 15 5= Subtract the mean each data =4 5=
