How Structure Informs
Function

I will be using an analogy.
Nucleus
The nucleus is the control center of the cell. It contains
DNA which has instructions for the cell to do its job.
The nucleus is like the principal because the nucleus is in
control of the cell while the principal is in control of the school.
Mitochondria
The mitochondria is called the powerhouse of the cell because it
makes energy from glucose and oxygen. The energy it makes
is called ATP.
The mitochondria is like the cafeteria because the
mitochondria takes food and makes energy just like the
cafeteria gives students food so they can have energy.
Cytoplasm
Cytoplasm is a jelly-like substance that fills the cell,
surrounds all organelles and protects them from
damage.
The cytoplasm is like the chairs in the school because the
cytoplasm surrounds and protects organelles like the chairs
surround and protect students.
Amyloplast
Amyloplasts are responsible for the storing starch
granules. The starch comes from glucose made by the
plant. When the plant needs energy, the starch granules
are changed back into glucose.
The amyloplast are like sugar packets in the cafeteria.
The sugar is stored until it is used for food in order to
make energy.
