Dermatology for Swimmers Jill Nelson, MD Dermatology Specialists of Omaha Dermatology for Swimmers • Hair care • Skin care • Sun protection Hair Care • Chemicals in pools bond to germs to neutralize them • Chemicals also bind to your hair and skin • Swimmers are prone to dry hair • Dry hair is more fragile Hair Care • Shower before you enter the pool • Wear a swim cap • Rinse hair with either water or a clarifying shampoo to remove the chlorine • Apple cider vinegar can be diluted and used periodically • Rinse well Hair Care • Add mineral oil before or after swimming to protect and moisturize hair • Coconut or other oils will work • Limit perms, hair color, hair relaxing (once per month) and hot ironing treatments (once per week) • Braiding hair can help protect, if not too tight Skin care • Pool chemicals also bind to your skin • Rinse your skin before you swim • Take a 5-7 minute shower after swimming to rinse the pool chemicals • Apply a creamy no fragrance moisturizer or oil to your skin after you swim Sun protection • Ultraviolet light damages your skin’s DNA • Sun damage leads to sunspots, “aged” skin and wrinkles • Sun exposure increases your risk for skin cancer • Fair skin has the highest risk of skin cancer but anyone can get skin cancer, even if your skin is dark or tans easily Sun protection • Skin cancer is rare in teenagers but you can increase your risk with sun exposure • Getting a lot of sun exposure when you are young will increase your risk for your whole life • Protect your skin now and you will have better skin the rest of your life Sunblock • Sunblock needs to be at least SPF 30 • Apply at least every 2 hours • Apply generously and rub it in so you see it on your skin • Bring a tent, hat, sunglasses • Use a zinc based sunblock if you have sensitive skin or if you burn easily Trouble shooting for swimmers • There are a few risks at the pool • Warts/molluscum/germs • Keep your skin clean and moisturized to reduce the chances of infection • Wear flip flops in the showers and shoes on deck to reduce the risk of plantar warts and athletes foot (fungus) • Most molluscum and warts will disappear over time 1-3 years, but if they are painful, they can be treated • Athletes foot can be treated with over the counter anti -fungal cream or your doctor can help you
