Swimmers are prone to dry
hair

Dry hair is more fragile

Shower before you enter the
pool
•
Wear a swim cap
•
Rinse hair with either water or a
clarifying shampoo to remove the
chlorine
•
Apple cider vinegar can be
diluted and used periodically
•
Rinse well

Add mineral oil before or after swimming to
protect and moisturize hair
•
Coconut or other oils will work
•
Limit perms, hair color, hair relaxing (once per
month) and hot ironing treatments (once per
week)
•
Braiding hair can help protect, if not too tight
Skin care

Pool chemicals also bind to your
skin
•
Rinse your skin before you swim
•
Take a 5-7 minute shower after
swimming to rinse the pool

Sun protection

Ultraviolet light damages your

Fair skin has the highest risk
of skin cancer but anyone can
get skin cancer, even if your
skin is dark or tans easily

Skin cancer is rare in
teenagers but you can
increase your risk with sun
exposure

Getting a lot of sun exposure
when you are young will
increase your risk for your
whole life
•
Protect your skin now and you
will have better skin the rest of
your life
Sunblock
•
Sunblock needs to be at least
SPF 30
•
Apply at least every 2 hours
•
Apply generously and rub it in
so you see it on your skin
•
Bring a tent, hat, sunglasses
•
Use a zinc based sunblock if
you have sensitive skin or if
you burn easily
Trouble shooting for
swimmers
•
There are a few risks at the pool
•
Warts/molluscum/germs
•
Keep your skin clean and moisturized
to reduce the chances of infection
•
Wear flip flops in the showers and
shoes on deck to reduce the risk of
plantar warts and athletes foot (fungus)
•
Most molluscum and warts will
disappear over time 1-3 years, but if
they are painful, they can be treated
•
Athletes foot can be treated with over
the counter anti -fungal cream or your
doctor can help you
