Compay que linda es, es la bandera Friend, how lovely it is, the flag of Puerto Puertorriqueña. Rico. -‐ Translation Elizabeth Pauly Background From the publisher: This is a wonderfully catchy yet moving song of affirmation frequently sung by Puerto Rican people whenever the opportunity presents itself – during excurciones (field trips) to Old San Juan on a guagua (school bus), demonstrations in Puerto Rico or in the States, or during a meeting of the National Congress of Puerto Rico that brought representatives from all over. It is a positive expression of affirmation and unity among out people who have been in a state of political limbo for many years. It acknowledges our bonds with our beloved island, and with the multicultural heritage of our compatriots (los patriotas). The Puerto Rican flag has white and red stripes, with a white star in a blue triangular background. Everywhere one travels in © Copyright 2015 Elizabeth Pauly. All rights reserved. Puerto Rico, and even in some Puerto Rican communities on the mainland, this flag is proudly flown beside that of the United States. Puerto Ricans are citizens of the United States, but we have a strong national identity and a tremendous amount of pride in our heritage. The song reaffirms the best in the identity of our people. I remember hearing “Que Bonita Bandera” sung during a demonstration over the construction of the Civic Center in Harford, Connecticut, construction that was going to cause displacement of some of the neighborhood people. The singing began and grew spontaneously, as the people felt it was a way to identify as a group, to show the renaissance of pride in our culture, our flag, our way of thinking. Soon, participants were playing percussion instruments and dancing as they moved through the streets.1 Recordings Ramito – not our arrangement, but great recording: https://youtu.be/QYcBe-‐qe6Pk Analysis Key: D minor Meter: 2/2 Structure – 32 measure song in four phrases; AABB This arrangement has a four measure instrumental introduction and a four measure instrumental coda. 1 Alejandro Jimenez. “Que Bonita Banderas.” World Music Press, 1989.
