Whichplate?TheHealthyEatingPlateorMyplate.gov
Thefoodpyramidhasbeenreplacedbyacolorfulplate.However,twonutritiongroupshave
createdthem.Whichoneshouldwechoosetoguideustowardhealtheating.TheHealthyEating
PlatewasdevelopedbytheHarvardSchoolofPublicHealthandHarvardMedicalSchool(2011).
Itdirectsconsumerstothehealthiestchoicesinthemajorfoodgroups.Choosemyplate.govwas
createdbytheUnitedStatesDepartmentofAgriculture(USDA,2011).Thefollowingsections
compareandcontrastthecontentsofthetwoplates.
Wholegrains
TheHealthyEatingPlateencouragesconsumerstochoosewholegrainsandlimitrefinedgrains,
sincewholegrainsarebetterforhealth.Inthebody,refinedgrainslikewhitebreadandwhite
riceactlikesugar.Eatingtoomuchoftheserefined‐grainfoodsoveranextendedperiodoftime
canmakeithardertocontrolweightandpossiblyraisetheriskofheartdiseaseanddiabetes
(HarvardUniversitySchoolofPublicHealth).
Choosemyplate.govstatedthatweshouldmakeatleasthalfourgrainswholegrains.
Healthyprotein
TheHealthyEatingPlateencouragesustoselectfish,poultry,beansornuts,proteinsourcesthat
containotherhealthfulnutrients.Itrecommendslimitingredmeatandavoidingprocessed
meat,sinceeatingevensmallquantitiesofthesefoodsonaregularbasisraisestheriskofheart
disease,diabetes,coloncancer,andweightgain(HarvardUniversitySchoolofPublicHealth).
MyPlate’sproteinsectionoffersnoindicationthatsomehigh‐proteinfoodsarehealthierthan
others,orthatredandprocessedmeatareespeciallyharmfultohealth(HarvardUniversity
SchoolofPublicHealth).Italsostatesthatweshouldgoleanwithproteins.
Vegetables
TheHealthyEatingPlateencouragesanabundantvarietyofvegetables,sinceAmericansare
particularlydeficientintheirvegetableconsumption—exceptforpotatoesandFrenchfries.
Potatoesarechockfullofrapidlydigestedstarch,andtheyhavethesameeffectonbloodsugar
asrefinedgrainsandsweets,solimitedconsumptionisrecommended(HarvardUniversity
SchoolofPublicHealth).

Fruit
TheHealthyEatingPlaterecommendseatingacolorfulvarietyoffruits.

Watervs.Dairy
TheHealthyEatingPlateencouragesustodrinkwater,ortotrycoffeeandtea(withlittleorno
sugar),whicharealsogreatcalorie‐freealternatives.Itencouragesustoavoidsugarydrinks,
sincethesearemajorcontributorstotheobesityanddiabetesepidemics.Itrecommends
limitingmilkanddairytoonetotwoservingsperday,sincehighintakesareassociatedwith
increasedriskofprostatecancerandpossiblyovariancancer;itrecommendslimitingjuice,even
100%fruitjuice,tojustasmallglassaday,becausejuicecontainsasmuchsugarandasmany
caloriesassugarysoda(HarvardUniversitySchoolofPublicHealth).
Choosemyplate.govencouragesustoswitchtofatfreeorlowfat(1%)milk.Italsoincludes
calciumfortifiedsoy“milk”withinitsdairygroup.
