DATES ALL THE SWEETNESS OF SUGAR – IN A HEART-HEALTHY, WHOLE FOOD Show your customers you care about their well-being by using dates in your products as an alternative to refined sugar. Dates are coming to the rescue as a healthier sugar substitute. Dates are loaded with essential nutrients that have been associated with potential health benefits – from maintaining heart health to fighting cancer. As a low-glycemic carbohydrate, dates provide the sweetness your customers crave without the negative effects of sugar. And because dates have soluble fiber, they help your customers feel full. Date fructose and glucose sugars create a sweetness similar to table sugar. Date paste and date syrup make ideal replacements for refined sugar in various food formulations, such as soft drinks, energy bars, baked goods and confections. In fact, date products in foods like bread and yogurt have been shown to improve taste and texture. DATES – A POWER-PACKED SUGAR SUBSTITUTE In addition to providing the sweetness people crave, dates are an excellent source of: • Protein Dates contain 23 types of amino acids, including all the essential amino acids. • Dietary Fiber A 1/4-cup serving of dates provides 12% of the RDA for fiber. Dates include an important soluble fiber known as beta-D-Glucan, which helps people feel more sated and contributes to regularity. Healthy, delicious dates – the food of the future has been here all along. • Antioxidant Phytochemicals Dates are rich in a variety of plant chemicals – such as phenolics, sterols, carotenoids, anthocyanins, procyanidins and flavonoids – shown to protect the body against oxidation and inflammation. DATES ARE A HEALTHY SUGAR SUBSTITUTE IN: Among commonly consumed whole fresh fruits, dates rank high in antioxidant polyphenols, which protect against the damaging effects of inflammation and destroy free radicals that can cause heart disease and other chronic diseases. •Cakes • Pies •Muffins •Breads • Cookies •Brownies •Cobblers • Energy bars •Smoothies •Salad dressings •Marinades •Glazes • Vitamins and Minerals Dates provide 16 vitamins and minerals, including vitamins B3, B5, B6 and B9, iron, and calcium. A 1/2-cup of dates provides 15% of the RDA for selenium, copper, potassium and magnesium. • Healthy Fatty Acids Dates contain saturated and unsaturated fatty acids – including lauric, palmitic, linoleic and linolenic acids. These fatty acids have been shown to reduce triglycerides and lower cholesterol. 1.800.827.8017 | woodspurfarms.com GOOD FOR THE GUT THE MINERAL WEALTH OF DATES The synergistic action of the polyphenols and insoluble fibers found in dates could enhance colonic health. Data suggest that consumption of dates may increase beneficial gut bacterial growth and inhibit the proliferation of colon cancer cells. This is an early suggestion that date intake by humans may aid in the maintenance of bowel health and even the reduction of colorectal cancer development. Dates or Sugar? There’s NO comparison! • Dates have 2-1/2 times more potassium than bananas. According to the World Health Organization, potassium plays an important role in reducing blood pressure and the risk of cardiovascular disease, and most people don’t get enough of it. • Consuming a cup of chopped dates provides 63 milligrams of magnesium, which aids protein synthesis, blood glucose control, and muscle and nerve function, while also helping to regulate blood pressure. • Fluorine in dates is useful in protecting teeth against decay. • Selenium in dates helps to prevent cancer and is important in immune function. • Dates are considered a good supplement for correcting iron deficiencies and anemia. • Dates supply 18% of the daily value for copper in a 1/2-cup serving. Copper is an essential trace mineral that helps your body both absorb and use iron to form red blood cells. •The sulfur in dates can help stem the effects of SAR (Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis), which affects approximately 23 million people in the United States alone. 1 CUP 1 CUP OF DATES OF SUGAR CALORIES 120774 Protein YESNO B Vitamins YES NO Potassium YESNO Minerals YESNO PhytochemicalsYES NO Healthy Fatty Acids YES NO Fiber YESNO AntioxidantsYES NO HOW DATES GROW Date palms take 7 to 10 years to produce viable yields for commercial harvest. Mature date palms can produce 150 to 300 pounds of dates each season. Dates grow in strands. To get the best fruit, we thin out more than half of the young fruit from each strand so the remaining dates can grow large. When these dates are nearly ripe, we cover bunches of strands with muslin bags that protect the fruit from weather, birds and insects. When it’s time to harvest the fruits, we untie the bags and collect the strands. Finally, the fruits are washed, separated and packaged or processed. DATES COMPLEMENT ANY DIET Dates for DASH Dieters The DASH diet – which grew out of research sponsored by the U.S. National Institutes of Health – has been shown to lower blood pressure without medication. Because dates are rich in potassium, calcium and magnesium and high in fiber, they’re a perfect fit for the DASH diet. A Mediterranean Diet Staple As one of the oldest known fruits from the desert, dates have always been part of a healthy, Mediterranean diet. In addition to helping people lose weight, the Mediterranean diet seems to help people lower their cholesterol, reduce their risk for Alzheimer’s, diabetes and various types of cancer, and improve rheumatoid arthritis. This diet is centered on foods indigenous to the Mediterranean region – like olive oil and fish, along with whole grains and plant foods, including, of course, the date. Kids Love ,em! Dates contain nutrients necessary for growth and health, including potassium for controlling blood pressure and maintaining the healthy development of muscle and bone. This essential mineral is needed to build muscle, regulate your heart beat, control fluid balances and break down carbohydrates. Vitamin B6 found in dates is an essential nutrient for protein metabolism so that your body can build muscle and grow hair and nails. Dates for Athletes Fuel the machine. Dates are a perfect food for an active lifestyle, providing potassium and magnesium. These electrolytes play an important role in athletic performance – potassium by carrying electrical charges to help muscles contract, and magnesium by dilating blood vessels to control blood pressure. A powerhouse of energy, dates are packed with both quick-digesting carbohydrates and fiber to control blood sugar for lasting energy. Dates are also an excellent source of the amino acid leucine, which contributes to muscle growth and also regulates blood sugar. Dates for Vegetarians, Vegans and Paleo Dieters In addition to providing the sweetness of sugar without its negative health effects, dates provide vegetarians and vegans with amino acids, particularly lysine and leucine. These essential nutrients contribute to the complete proteins that non-meat eaters sometimes find difficult to include in their diets. Dates are also a terrific source of nutrients for paleo dieters, who are limiting refined sugars. A NATURAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY Common health problems, including heart disease and diabetes, are associated with inflammation in the body. Antioxidants, particularly polyphenols from fruit, have been shown to work directly to neutralize free radicals and possibly reduce the damage caused by inflammation. Among commonly consumed whole fresh fruits, dates rank high in antioxidant polyphenols. In fact, a recent study showed that date polyphenols inhibited the development of COX1 and COX2, enzymes associated with inflammation. In sufficient quantities, magnesium has been shown to reduce the risk of arthritis and Alzheimer’s – both diseases associated with inflammation. Women who are pregnant might consider eating dates to treat pain or inflammation instead of NSAIDs like ibuprofen, which could pose risks to both mother and fetus. A study published in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology suggests that eating six dates a day during the last four weeks of pregnancy s ignificantly decreases the need for the induction and augmentation of labor.
