Spelling Activities
Looking for a rainy day activity? Practice your spelling words,
past and present, using one of the following fun ideas!
1. Write your spelling words in ABC order from A to Z, then
from Z to A.
2. Write each spelling word in a sentence. Draw a box around
each spelling word with a marker or crayon.
3. Write your spelling words “sailboat” style.
4. Write each spelling word three times each. Circle your
neatest handwriting for each word.
5. Find a word that has the same beginning/ending sound(s) as
your spelling words.
6. Write each spelling word in lowercase letters, then again in
capitals letters, and then again in lowercase letters.
7. Cut out letters from old magazines and newspapers and glue
them onto a sheet of paper, spelling out each of your
spelling words.
8. Write two rhyming words for each spelling word.
9. Use all of your spelling words to make a word search.
10.
Write tongue twister sentences for each of your
spelling words. Example: Let’s listen to a lovely lullaby.
11. Write each spelling word using capital letters for vowels
and lowercase letters for consonants.
12.
Write a sentence for each of your spelling words. Use
a classmates’ name in each of your sentences.
13.
Write each odd-numbered word in a question and each
even-numbered word in a statement.
14.
Write your spelling words in alphabetical order. Be
sure to skip lines between your words. Go back and insert a
new word that would come between each of your spelling
words in alphabetical order.
15.
Write each of your spelling words. Look them up in
the dictionary. Then write the guide words that are on the
page where your spelling word is found.
16.
Write each spelling word in a sentence. Underline the
subject of the sentence in red, and underline the predicate
in blue.
17.
Write your words in sentences that are commands.
18.
Write each spelling word forward, backward, then
forward again.
19.
Write each spelling word and then think of two new
words you can spell using the letters in your spelling words.
20.
Write the odd-numbered spelling words in sentences
stating facts. Write the even-numbered spelling words in
sentences that are opinions.
21.
Have a friend or family member give you a practice
spelling test with this week’s words.
22.
Have a friend or family member give you a review test
using past spelling words.
23.
Write each spelling word. Then write two words with
the same vowel sound as your spelling word.
24.
Write your spelling words three times each, once in
pen, once in pencil, and once in marker.
25.
Pretend you can change into an animal for a day.
Write several sentences about your day, using at least six
of your spelling words. Circle each spelling word you used.
