This is the Hypotenuse-Leg (HL) Theorem. ΔABC ≅ ΔPQR because they are both right triangles, their hypotenuses are congruent ( AC ≅ PR ), and one pair of legs is congruent ( BC ≅ QR ). How can you prove that two right triangles that have one pair of congruent legs and congruent hypotenuses are congruent (The Hypotenuse-Leg Theorem)? Both of the triangles are right triangles. ∠B and ∠E are right angles. AB ≅ DE and AC ≅ DF . How can you prove that ΔABC ≅ ΔDEF ? Look at ∆DEF. Draw a ray starting at F that passes through E. Mark a point X so that EX = BC. Then draw DX to create ∆DEX. See that EX ≅ BC . (You drew this.) ∠DEX ≅ ∠ABC . (All right angles ≅ are congruent.) DEAB . (This was given.) So, by SAS, ΔABC ≅ ΔDEX . DXAC ≅ (by CPCTC) and ACDF ≅ . (This was given.). So, by the Transitive ≅ ≅∠ Property of Congruence, DXDF . Then, ∠DEXDEF . (All right angles are ≅Δ congruent.) By the Isosceles Theorem, ∠XF≅ ∠ . So, by AAS, ΔDEXDEF . Therefore, by the Transitive Property of Congruence, ΔABCDEF ≅Δ Are the given triangles congruent by the Hypotenuse-Leg Theorem?
