Sentence Building Soft Touch™ Dice: Set 1 and how they’re used in a sentence, before having students work with the Dice on their own. Congratulations on your purchase of Sentence Building Soft Touch™ Dice: Set 1, a hands-on activity that introduces or strengthens grammar and parts of speech. Model the Activity Objective Start by going over simple combinations: Article + noun, noun + verb, and adjective + noun. Demonstrate building a complete sentence by rolling first an article, then a noun, and finally, a verb. Place the Dice next to each other in order and read them aloud, for example, “The man walk.” Write the words and ask students to tell you where you might change or add letters to make the sentence read correctly. Add an s to make “The man walks.” (“The men walk” is also acceptable.) Sometimes the verb will need to be changed to give it a tense, as by adding ed. Add or switch out Dice. Students build and record sentences. Meeting State Standards This type of practice in sentence building helps students meet grade-level expectations and prepare for standardized testing. Sentence Building Soft Touch™ Dice Set 1 can also help improve their grammar and understanding of sentence structure. This Really Good Stuff® product includes: • 10 Dice • This Really Good Stuff® Activity Guide Variations • Students roll a selection of Dice and see how many sentences they can make within a certain time limit. • Students build the sentence as they record, rolling one Die at a time. • Leave out the Dice for some words, and students fill them in as needed. • Students have the opportunity to re-roll Dice when words don’t work, such as “An girl.” • Give students all the Dice at once and let them discover the sentence structures. • Provide a sentence frame and one or two Dice for the parts of speech you want students to practice. For example, provide noun and adjective Dice to fill the frame “The ____ ____ runs.” (“The puppy quietly runs,” etc.) • Students build a sentence with an article, a noun, and a verb, and then roll the orange adjective Die to determine how many adjectives make sense in the context. • Students label parts of speech when they record sentences. Building sentences using Dice is a fun way for students to learn sentence structure and other grammar skills. With Sentence Building Soft Touch™ Dice: Set 1, students roll Dice that are color-coded by part of speech, and try to build sentences with the random selection of nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Articles are also included to complete the sentences. Silly Sentences Many of the words rolled won’t make very realistic statements. Although the semantics might be awkward, a grammatical sentence may be formed, for example “A giant doctor bites.” You can have students re-roll one or more Dice to get words that make more sense in the sentence. Or have students record all grammatical sentences, and later share their funniest sentences built with the Dice. Sentence Building Game Using a timer, have students take turns rolling a selection of Dice and, without moving the Dice around, see who can make and record the most sentences within five minutes. Vary the time limit to the students’ abilities as needed. Managing the Center-in-a-Bag • Copy and file this Activity Guide for future use. • Place the Dice in a center for an individual or group activity. • Demonstrate how to tidy the center when the activity is complete. Sentence Building Cube Activity One to four students Materials: Selection of Dice, pencil, paper 1. Roll the Dice. 2. Place the Dice in logical order to make a sentence. 3. Record the sentence, changing or adding letters as needed to make it grammatical. Introducing Sentence Building Soft Touch™ Dice: Set 1 There are 10 Dice color-coded by parts of speech. (See the list below.) Do not overwhelm students by giving them all the Dice at once, unless they are ready to distinguish which will work together to make sentences.
