(the king instrument) as this instrument reminds the most the human voice. According to
thegreatphilosopherAl-Farabi(m.950):«itssoundslooklikethevoice’ssoundsbecause,
asthem,theyareabletosupportandfluctuate”.
Fouad Haddad (1928-1985), surnamed the father of the modern poets, was the first to
publish a collection of poems in Egyptian dialectal language. Haddad's work fits perfectly
intothelineageofsacredArabicpoetictraditionlastingformorethanthousandyears.That
is why he was often compared to the great medieval Arab poets, such as illustrious Abou
Nawasandal-Mutanabi,orthefamousSufipoetJalalel-Dinal-Rumi.

SayyedDarwish(1892-1923)
Singerandlyricalcomposer,wasbornMarch17,1892inAlexandria.Histalentandhiscompositions
arenow considered a "bridge" between traditional Arabic music, he does not upset the traditional
structuresandmodernmusic,includingWestern.Assuch,this"visionary"ishailedas"thefatherof
the new Egyptian music and the heroes of the renaissance of Arabic music." His most famous
composition is of course "Biladi, Biladi, Biladi", the Egyptian national anthem, the text has been
adapted from a famous speech of Mustafa Kamil. This essential composer ideally symbolizes a
transitionfromtraditionalArabicmusicandmodern,bothinfluencedbytheWest(Italianoperaand
operettas)andmarkedbytechnology(theadventofmodernrecordingmeans).
