But what used to be a death-sentence now needn’t be. In Argentina, cutting-edge technology is offering new hope. (13") In 2010, Carlos Perez was diagnosed with throat cancer. It all began when Carlos felt something was wrong with his voice. (9") CARLOS PEREZ: (In Spanish) CARLOS ON-CAM “It practically had no sound. I spoke very softly.” (12") “The cancer caught my larynx and part CARLOS ON-CAM of the vocal cords.” (10") I was shocked. These advances are part of a global effort by the International Atomic Energy Agency to put nuclear medicine centre stage in the fight against cancer. (19") DR. (7") -5- NARRATION Experts say over the next two decades, PEOPLE IN STREETS cancer rates will jump by 70% worldwide. Currently some eight million people die each year from the disease. CARLOS AND MELODY But the increased use of technologies like nuclear medicine offers a glimmer of hope for sufferers, and their families, around the world.
