Geometry Angles & Triangles Lesson Plan for Grade 5, Math Prepared by Ms. Hall OVERVIEW & PURPOSE The students will start a new unit in math that focuses on Geometry. This unit is a review of previous years when it comes to classifying angles. This year the students will learn how to use protractors, and find missing angle measurements. Students will also be drawing angle measures with the use of protractors. EDUCATION STANDARDS Geometry 5.12 The student will classify a) angles as right, acute, obtuse, or straight; and b) triangles as right, acute, obtuse, equilateral, scalene, or isosceles. Measurement 5.11 The student will ● measure right, acute, obtuse, and straight angles. OBJECTIVES The student(s) will be able to: 1 1. Identify the appropriate tools (e.g., protractor and straightedge or angle ruler as well as available software) used to measure and draw angles and triangles. 2. Measure right, acute, straight, and obtuse angles, using appropriate tools, and identify their measures in degrees. 3. Recognize angle measure as additive. When an angle is decomposed into non overlapping parts, the angle measure of the whole is the sum of the angle measures of the parts. 4. Solve addition and subtraction problems to find unknown angle measures on a diagram in practical and mathematical problems, 5. Understand and classify that angles as right, acute, obtuse, or straight according to their measures. 6. Understand and classify triangles by equilateral, scalene, or isosceles according to the number of sides with equal length. 7. Understand and classify triangles by either right, acute, or obtuse according to the measure of its largest angle. ACTIVITY Describe activity that will reinforce the lesson Lesson 1: 1 day Intro to Angles ● Students will take notes in their interactive notebooks ○ WS ACTIVITY: ■ acute ■ obtuse ■ right ○ Then the students will write definitions for ■ acute (less than 90 degrees) ■ right (90 degrees) ■ obtuse (greater than 90 degrees) ■ Straight Line (180 degrees) ■ protractor○ Students will draw an angle ○ Students will learn how to use protractors & given directions to glue into notebooks 2 ○ Practice: ■ Students will practice classifying/measuring angles with protractors on various items around the room-● they will be recording their findings on a recording sheet ○ The students will classify angles into categories by themselves when they are finished ■ they can keep these angles for practice & studying purposes ■ measure by protractors Lesson 2 : Practice with protractors and missing angles → I have / Who has Angle game ● Students will measure the angle given to them with a protractor. They will read what their angle is in degrees and will ask “who has _____ degrees ” (that is on their card) this will continue until every person has shared what angle they have and the degrees it is measured! 3 stations: 1. drawing angles using protractors 2. turning the wheel (-) & (+) turns using the protractor 3. Brief history and finding the missing angles! Lesson 3: Review of Angles & New Notes on Triangles! *I have / Who Has Angle game (2nd time different cards for extra practice) ● Students will measure the angle given to them with a protractor. They will read what their angle is in degrees and will ask “who has _____ degrees ” (that is on their card) this will continue until every person has shared what angle they have and the degrees it is measured! ● We will start notes on triangle classification by side and angle ○ we will mark this in our notes ■ acute, obtuse, right ■ scalene, isosceles, equilateral ■ each side will be marked by tik marks and labeled a, b, c. ● A right triangle has one right angle. ● An obtuse triangle has one obtuse angle. ● An acute triangle has three acute angles (or no angle measuring 90° or greater). 3 ● A scalene triangle has no congruent sides. ● An isosceles triangle has two congruent sides. ○ To facilitate the exploration of relationships, ask students whether a right triangle can have an obtuse angle. Why or why not? Can an obtuse triangle have more than one obtuse angle? Why or why not? What type of angles are the two angles other than the right angle in a right triangle? What type of angles are the two angles other than the obtuse angle in an obtuse triangle? ● We will use toothpick to construct triangles and then categorize them according to ○ angles: acute, obtuse, & right ○ sides: equilateral, scalene, and obtuse! Lesson 4 : finding the missing angle in Triangles / building/ classifying Triangles ● The students will finish their toothpick triangles construction and classification ● we will then learn how to find the missing angle degrees of triangle ABC ○ if we have 2 of the 3 measures because: ○ triangles add up to 180 degrees ■ Practice WS on finding missing angle degrees ● Scavenger Hunt: ○ the students will be finding the missing angle degree measure ■ triangles will be placed around the room: ● The student will need to find the missing degree measurement & ○ classify the triangle ● The student’s will have individual recording pages (Vegetable themed) MATERIALS NEEDED 1. Protractors 2. Interactive Notebooks 3. Promethean board or whiteboard 4. Worksheets: a. notes 1. Triangles 2. Angle 4 b. practice finding missing part 1. Triangles 2. Angles c. turning the wheel d. drawing angles / triangles 5. Toothpick Constructing & Classifying 6. I have/ Who has? game VERIFICATION Steps to check for student understanding 1. Did the students meet the objective? 2. How do you know? 3. Did your lesson meet the needs of all your students? 4. Strengths/weaknesses? 5. What would you change? 5
