Outdoor Arts and Theatre School (O.A.T.S)
Description:
O.A.T.S. is an opportunity for students to showcase their creativity and develop skills and confidence
while exploring the outdoors Our skilled O.A.T.S instructors support students with developing an original
performance pieces to showcase their talents and creativity over the course of three days. Students begin with a
blank canvas to explore their inner artist by offering them the opportunity to contribute to creating art!
O.A.T.S is structured a little differently from our other outdoor school programs. Choose a theme that will
work for your students and dive into a whole other world.
Learning Outcomes:
Students will develop outdoor skills, gain leadership training and explore their creativity through art and
theatre in various mediums. Students will engage with the themes and characters of various stories. Students will
be challenged to explore their inner leader, and encouraged to engage in fireside reflection at the end of every
day.
Duration: 2 nights 3 days
Number of Campers: 12+
Age: Grades 4 +
Price: $255 - $280
Fabled Tales:
Students will create masks, scripts and songs to illustrate one of Aesop’s Fables. These artistic endeavours will
culminate in a spectacle. Students will choose a core contribution from those listed below. They will focus on this
aspect of the project which will culminate in an artistic spectacle. They will have breaks in which they participate in
the program choices listed below.

Costume and Mask-Making – Students will create costumes and masks which the actors and musicians
will wear during the spectacle.

Theatre and Acting – Students will take one of Aesop’s Fables and adapt it to tell the story in our context.
Fircom instructors will help students cast and rehearse their parts in preparation for the spectacle.

Music and Accompaniment – Students will write and rehearse music and percussion to accompany the
spectacle. They will create instruments from the natural environment in addition to using traditional
instruments.

Oh the Places You’ll Go/The Sneetches:
Students will explore complicated issues through the beloved books of Dr. Seuss
Oh the Places You’ll Go – Students will explore life’s challenges and different ways to approach them. They will
choose a core contribution from those listed below. They will focus on this aspect of the project which will
culminate in an artistic spectacle. They will have breaks in which they participate in the program choices listed
below.
The Sneetches – Students will explore themes of prejudice and bullying through this story. They will choose a core
contribution from those listed below. They will focus on this aspect of the project which will culminate in an artistic
spectacle. They will have breaks in which they participate in the program choices listed below.


The Mysterious Mr. Bear:
Following in the footsteps of Agatha Christie, this adventure will call on students and teachers to be detectives.
Students will become detectives, suspects, accomplices and even… culprits. Fircom instructors will coach students
to stage scenes from the story, uncover evidence and ultimately decide who is responsible. You may also choose
from the non- theme activities below.
Core Mystery Activities






The set up – Fircom instructors will set up
the story.
Footprints in the Sand – Learn how to track
animals in the natural environment and
perhaps come across mysterious footprints.
Camp Wide Games – a wild game of capture
the flag in the forest turns up a cache of
evidence. But who left it behind, and what
does it mean?
Forest Edibles Walk – Learn about local
plants that are excellent food sources. And
maybe discover that you weren’t the first to
graze these forests. Is there a mysterious
person lurking in the woods?
Hike to Halkett Bay – Hike through the
woods to explore Halkett Bay. Explore the
forest and perhaps find a mysterious
stranger in a deserted shack.
The Grand Reveal – All is revealed and the
mystery is solved.
Program Choice: (pick three options)
 Archery – Learn the anatomy of a bow and
arrow. Plenty of time to practice your
marksmanship.
 Evening School Choice – Campfire, camp
wide activity, astronomy, night hike or
drive-in film
 Swim – Swim instruction & supervision for
swimmers. Non-swimmers will engage in
fort building along the beach
 Camp Activity Blocks – Frisbee golf, fricket,
camp wide games, arts and crafts
 Farm Art – Experimentation with leaf prints
or collectively create a beach or forest
mandala.
